A week ago my sweetie and I were out paddling) on the river in our wooden
double sea kayak (a Pygmy Osprey). Every now and then, it would vibrate, and
make a deep buzzing sound. (No, I am not making this up.) After the fourth or
fifth vibration, we noticed it coincided with the horn blast from an upriver
ship, no doubt bleating in the thin fog. The ship was out of sight behind some
islands, and probably at least two miles away. The horn blast was actually
quite faint.

My conclusion was that the large open space connecting the two cockpits was
resonating in sympathy with the note from the ship's horn.

I guess I should not be surprised at this, although at first it was very eerie.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Only when the replica of Cook's Endeavour fired a cannon across my bow, a
glass boat and it and I resonated !!!

As far as I remember when she did it when paddling my wooden boat there
wasn't the same effect.

I was out about a month ago, and I kept hearing a thumping noise, timed
with my stroke rate, but only higher stroke rates. The wierd thing was that
I'd hear one more "thump" after I quit stroking.

It took the longest time to figure out that it was a half-full water bottle
rolling around on the knee shelf.

Dear Dave and all,
I too have heard strange 'resonances' conveyed through the hull of a kayak.
My brother's three-hole nylon-covered Kodiak baidarka emitted 'pops' and
'clicks' as a freighter passed us by on the Columbia River. It was not the
thrumming of the engines. . . . . just a wierd clicking. I've also noticed
this when rolling near motorboats-- especially when wearing a neoprene hood.
(Say. . . .is it just me, or do neoprene hoods hamper one's ability to hear
conversation while at the same time greatly ACCENTUATING the roar of jet
airliners?)

Anyhow, I'm certain this is just a 'Columbia River thing', as Dave likely
has also come to realize.

Yeah, it's the ghosts of long-dead gillnetters, moaning to be released from the
sediments the Corps of Engineers piled over their watery graves ... [insert the
Twilight Zone noise].

Can somebody do the calculation and find out what the natural frequency of
vibration would be for the cockpit cavity of a double? I have not a clue --
certainly not a simple organ pipe shape!

Dave,

I too had a strange vibration and low buzzing noise when I first bought my CD
Gulfstream and had had i5t for about 2 weeks.. At first it appeared to be
related to whether or not the skeg was down and I was attributing it to the
skeg vibrating from quartering seas while it was deployed. The previous owner
of the boat assured me that he had never had a vibration or grumbling sound
from the boat.

It took a while, but I finally solved the mystery. I had been keeping my
paddling jacket in the day hatch and putting a water bottle in on top of it.
The weather had warmed up and I stopped carrying the paddling jacket. This
left my RIBBED water bottle free to roll around with the swells and the ribs
were producing the vibration and noise. As soon as I changed water bottle, the
vibration and noise left.

Steve

My Libra always hums a beautiful, warm tone when it is going really fast
down the face of a wave with the rudder down. We know we've got a good surf
when we hear the boat singing.
