Hi. I am looking for a kayak cartop carrier for a Yakima (or Thule) rack
that will allow me to carry an additional 16+ foot sea kayak on its
side. I have a small compact car (Honda Civic 2-door hatchback) and can
only carry only one rightside up (using Hully Rollers and Mako Saddles) due
to width constraints.

I have seen some J-shaped carriers, but these seem to only work with
whitewater boats.

Thanks!

I have carried two full size sea kayaks on their sides, using the old-style
Yakima saddles (similar to the Makos) on a similar subcompact. Required some
extra padding and bracing, but worked. Of course, bow and stern lines are a
good idea. I did not do this, but an extra pair of straps around the two, near
the rack, with padding between would increase the security.

I have a Civic as well and carry two sea kayaks easily. I have a 48 inch crossbar
and the secret is to attach the outer half of the cradle (in my case the older Thule
sea kayak cradle) on the part of the bar that extends outboard of the tower.
You could put a longer bar on if you need - just pad the ends so that you don't hurt
your head when you bang it.

There are a couple of brands that work with sea kayaks. Thule makes one.

I had the long Yakima bars on my old Honda (before I sold it to get
the Khatsalano). The trick is to reach out and grab the bar before
you get out. Eventually, you'll get in the habit of missing the bar.
And don't forget to remind people riding in your car to watch their
heads. You don't want to know how many people smacked their heads on
the bars in my car.

I've also seen people stick tennis balls on the bar ends. Works but
looks silly. Then again, 48" bars look silly too.

If you're not averse to working with wood and epoxy, doing
something similar to what Ross Leidy did is an elegant
solution for making a perfectly-fitting kayak cradle.

That's what I do to carry my two seakayaks (single and double) on a
Corolla, and my boats are relatively wide at 32" and 37". Also had a
canoe on top of the two kayaks on one trip.

"Watch out for the bar."
"What?"
"Don't hit your head on the..."
"OW! Dammit, why don't you warn people about these bars?!"

It's not the number of time you have to go through this dialog, it's the
number of time you repeat it with the same person (hint: who rides with
you the most?)

Love dem bright yellow head protectors.

One of the few things I like about SUVs is that most of them are so tall
that anyone sub-Wayne Hodorowitz can walk under them unscathed. Of
course, if you're sub-WH you can't reach the bars to put your boat up.
