Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a digital WATERPROOF camera?
I still really like the Pentax IQ Zoom WR that I've got, but the delay in
getting photos back is a bit annoying.

I'm not a professional photographer, so I'm really looking in the $500 -
$1000 range. Of course I'd be pleased to find something less costly but I'm
thinking this is a realistic range.

Thanks in advance.

Canon makes a waterproof housing for the A20 digital camera. The camera
goes for about $400 and is very highly rated. I haven't found anything on
how good or how much of a pain the housing is.

Bill Tuthill's list (http://creekin.net/cameras.htm) contains a couple of digital cameras.
Most digital cameras achieve waterproof status by being encased in a housing.
The Sony DSC-P5, for example, has a housing that is about US$250. It seems
like a decent camera. I'd prefer a hard housing to a soft case that some might
recommend.

There are a couple of weather resistant digital cameras, but nothing as good as
the dunkable Pentax that I've seen.

We haven't got anything like a Nikonos Digital yet... hopefully that'll come soon.

Hi Natalie,

I have a few suggestions for waterproof cases and digital cameras (though not
for a waterproof digital camera).

Cases
While you may purchase waterproof cases, I have two alternatives. First, if you
have basic tools and skills, I purchased EXCELLENT plans from Gary Dagastine
<garybeth_at_nidlink.com> on how to MAKE a scuba-quality waterproof camera case
for about $30. This case is probably overkill (even for whitewater) but the
design is suitable for protecting and using either video or still cameras under
extreme conditions of water pressure.

The other alternative for a waterproof case is to simply take your digital
camera in a Pelican case in your boat. This is the path I've chosen after
trying others. I take the camera out to shoot, then place it back in the case
to paddle... thousands of shots taken, no camera lost! This gives my total
access to camera controls and allows me to take any camera and extra lenses
suitable for a particular trip. It also allows me to review photos on the
camera LCD on the spot.

Cameras
I'm on my fifth digital camera and am extremely happy with them, having taken
thousands of photos from kayaks on many types of water.

Over the years, I've become very satisfied with Olympus cameras for their color
quality, ease of use taking photos and downloading, optical zoom, ability to
override automatic controls, and through the lens (SLR) viewfinder. There are
now many models. I've tried other makes and have found the downloading or image
quality to be inferior.

Lately, however, I've been tempted by the Canon Elph digital because of it's
small size, 4 megapixel spec, and $400 price, though it lacks the SLR feature I
mentioned. And I do suggest going with a 4 megapixel design (which is well
within your budget).

Regardless of the camera, take a look at the speed and ease of use of
downloading options also. Typically, USB is slow for files 1 to 4 mb in size.
So downloading directly from memory cartridges may be best. One high speed
option I use is a PCMCIA adapter that holds Smartmedia cards and allow copies
to my hard drive very fast.

Best wishes for your digital photography. Once you get used to it, you'll
never go back to film!

I have the canon S 100 which I just upgraded to the S110 which works
well. If you need deeper, more zoom and higher rez., the sony seems
nice. The size and shutter delay sold the canon to me. Both of these
cameras have a waterproof case made specifically for the camera. Both
are within your budget constraints.

Most of the images I make do not require a long zoom.

I have used an Olympus 620DL for four years now, and it has totally
revolutionized the way I do photography -- I find I actually enjoy taking
photos again. However, this camera was close to a thousand bucks when I
bought it, any I don't even take it out when the humidity is high. However,
I just hit a "day after Thanksgiving" sale and bought a HP215 for under
$100. It doesn't have the capabilities of the big camera, but it will do
for a camera to keep in the car and maybe take out in the boat in a drybag,
or something. List price on it is only about $135, and I've used it only a
little bit so far, just to make sure it works. But, my logic is that if I
should happen to drop it overboard, or something like that, I'm really not
out that much.

You might check out the links above. I opted for a Nikon coolPix 990, but
that may be more camera than you need. The cases for these cameras are
pretty spendy often $300 +, an inexpensive alternative is the Ewa (
http://www.ewa-marine.de/home.htm ) it is still often over $100. If you
want something small the Elph digital by Canon is excellent and Canon makes
waterproof housing for them. Also Olympus makes good cameras and they have
waterproof housings (check out the wet pixel site for pictures). Steves
digicam has great unbiased reviews of many cameras. If you want to check in
with a usenet group that focuses on digital cameras check out
rec.photo.digital There are many professional photographers who post on the
site and lots of different camera users. I haven't noticed any flame wars
just great information. If your browser isn't configured for usenet groups
then check them out via Google groups. http://groups.google.com/ You can
post to the group using google. Your camera can cook in a case so I keep
mine in my deck back. Good luck with your choice. One last tip if you have
a Costco nearby they have Photoshop Elements on sale for $74 and a rebate
coupon for $30. Great deal! Photoshop elements will allow you to stitch
together panorama shots, do touch-ups, remove red eye... etc. It is a great
addition to your camera. Go digital and post your pictures on the web we
want to see them! If you can afford it try to get a camera in at least the 2
megapixel range. The resolution on the pictures is much better. -- MZ

I was shocked to read on www.wetpixel.com that Nikon is discontinuing the
Nikonos V underwater camera. This has long been a favorite dive camera. I've
owned the original Nikonos, which Nikon designed in collaboration with
Jacques Cousteau, the Nikonos III (which I lost in a canoeing accident),
and, for 15 years or more, the Nikonos V. Rarely have my Nikonoses been in
salt water, but they have been on many a canoe and kayaking trip, and lain
in water sloshing around in the footwell of a small sailboat.

If you have ever wanted a Nikonos, this might be the time to buy one, before
the prices go up as they become more rare. Do note, however, that I was
unable to corroborate this news on the Nikon Web site, where the Nikonos is
still being advertised.

And I'll have to admit in my quest for a waterproof digital camera that it
was really a digital Nikonos I most hoped for. My idea of perfection in
kayaking cameras was the Nikonos that was hitched to a companion paddler
through the Colorado River (Grand Canyon in U.S.) at 30,000 cfs. Now THAT'S
a camera ready for action, in every sense.

So sorry to hear of the potential demise of the Nikonos.

Here is the official announcement:
http://www.nikon-image.com/eng/news_release/2001/nikonos-v.htm

Quoting from the press release:

"In light of relatively low sales volumes for this niche product in an age
of growing operating cost-consciousness...Nikon determined that it could not
continue to justify the cost and effort of specialized production required
to manufacture it in small quantities....

"Although the company has no current plans to introduce new underwater
photography products, we will continue to stay abreast of the market for
next-generation underwater cameras."

I might have mentioned this before, but my wife's Olympus 725SW
was getting a bit overage, so she decided she wanted something
else, with higher pixel count, and better zoom.

We checked out the dpreview.com's review of water-proof cameras,
and their finalists were the Canon PowerShot D10 and
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1, but she found the Canon a bit too fat
for her liking (it can be used for diving, a possible bonus)
and the LUMIX was just a bit too big.

Then by chance she found a camera to her liking, small and neat,
which we found out by chance, was dunkable, if not diveable!

It is wallet-sized, has a sliding door that protects the lens when not
in use, fits easily to a pocket on her PFD, and has a lot of goodies
like instant panormas - plus it takes pretty good video. It macro
goes to the front of the lens, and it has such newfanged things
like following focus, and you can point at what is should be
focusing at, too!

Like similar cameras, it should be washed in fresh water after
being used in seawater, and it is a 12 MP camera.

Just great!

After going to the camera shop, this Panasonic seems to be the most likely
candidate.
Very similar to the Pentax, but with a (perhaps) easier interface and a 1-button
video capability.
