I finally added the rest of the Fla photos from our recent trip. Unfortunately, they're not as sexy as the manatee pics, though. But how about gators, monkeys, eagles, scuba divers, and Dana in his Arctic Hawk? http://people.we.mediaone.net/murpho/index.htm Although come to think of it, maybe Dana in his Arctic Hawk is almost as sexy as the manatee?? Frank, No Fair! How did you get such good photos of those monkeys? I know. You got out of your kayak AND you have a much better camera AND you fed them! I stayed in my boat and I was afraid to kayak under them or too near them. Just a coward. Your photos are just too good. Your web page layout is professional quality and you've taken the time to write great stories! My friends enjoyed the river so much that they paddled up and back twice while we were in that area. The time I let them go out without me, they were busy watching the tourist boat. The tourists were looking in their direction, pointing at the kayaks, and talking loudly. Then the friends looked on the other side of their kayak and saw Bubbles, that huge alligator you mentioned. Needless to say, they paddled out of there fast. Will send a photo of Sandy and Naked Ed and me. Too lazy today to put it on a website. (There's nothing under that loincloth.) Frank, Please refer to the ibis in your photos as the "Mighty Ibis" or the "Fighting Ibis". He's a noisy, feisty, little bird. The IBIS is the mascot of University of Miami's football team. Sebastian the Ibis leads the cheers at Miami's games. Be respectful, Marinell We're number ONE. P.S. Thought it was time to get away from the flamingo topic. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Lucian" <murpho_at_mediaone.net> To: <PaddleWise_at_paddlewise.net> Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2002 3:12 AM Subject: [Paddlewise] More Florida photos - gators, monkeys, eagles,... > I finally added the rest of the Fla photos from our recent trip. > Unfortunately, they're not as sexy as the manatee pics, though. Now you "guys" see why some of us REALLY like living in Florida. A canal runs in front of the Miami-Dade Police headquarters in West Miami-Dade where I work, and sometimes there are special treats on the way in. Apart from the cows in the empty lot next door (reduced taxes for "agricultural land" - I heard some woman has a rent-a-cow business - that's entrepreneurial isn't it?) I get to see lots of herons and anhingas. This morning a large bird was flying in front of me, so all I could see were white wings with black tips. I'm thinking, "Looks to big for a white ibis, surely it couldn't be a wood stork." Fortunately, it landed, and shore 'nuf, it was a wood stork right in the middle of what has become quite an industrialized area - we get lots of trucks driving around because we're near the airport, so it's not really smoke-stack-type industry. Bill, the ex in Key Largo, called me yesterday to say he went to a friends house and there was the croc again. "Gator?" I said. "NO, croc." He went back in his boat and said he was able to take picture of this approx. 5-footer. I bet they don't swim in THAT canal. sandy kramer miami *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Frank, I enjoyed your web page so much that I'm going to run up to Crystal River on Saturday. I lived in Coral Gables,FL, across from the Coral Gables Waterway before moving to Sarasota. In one dead-end of the Waterway (Canal) there was a pod of 10-20 manatee wintering every year. Used to ride my bike over just to watch them. One day, we paddled with about 16 of them. We just picked our spot and they slowly gathered around. I have several friends in Miami who will lead people there if anyone is interested. Your buddy sounds even friendlier. Must be your after-shave. She would scare me a little.
