 Hi, all. My brother has asked me to take him on a 4ish day flatwater (Class I) trip (either Kayak or Canoe) in Pennsylvania or perhaps Maryland. We're not looking for a commercial outfitter from which to buy a trip. We want to plan it and take it as just the two of us, or with any P'Wisers who may want to join us.

I'm early in the planning process, have found a few trails in PA., but figured I'd do some trolling for info with you folks. My two leading candidates from the possibilities that I am aware of so far are the mid section of the Allegheny River Trial or the Juniata Trial. I'm not committed to either - I'm still building a list of potential locations to choose from.

The main issues are ease of the trip, adequate camping locations, beautiful scenery and isolation (at least being out of site from industry and generally developed land) and the possibility for a little decent fishing along the way, but that last issue takes a big back seat to the paddling itself.

Anybody have any knowledge of other possibilities? Thanks in advance.

Rick - Poquoson, VA

          One of the local canoe clubs here is planning a Memorial Day trip on
the Clarion River in Western PA -- a tributary of the Allegheny. I haven't
been there yet, but the stuff we've been able to find makes it sound pretty
good. You already know about the Susquehanna. You might also want to look at
the Greenbrier in WV. That's very accessible and can be an easy multiday
camping trip. So can the South Fork of the Shenandoah -- problem there is
adequate access but much of it flows through National Forest lands where
camping is easy to find....

Snip from Debbie;

 My companion last spring elected to paddle naked - something he had

always wanted to do but was concerned about offending others.

NOTE: I apologize in advance if the following is offensive to anyone.

I'm just trying to pass info to a paddler.

Debbie, in researching flatwater in PA, I ran across a Club that

specializes in your friends interest. It's the Paddle Bares Canoe Club

out of New Jersey. Their site is tasteful. They had some trip reports

with photos that I wanted to check out for the "non-human" scenery to

see if those trip locations would be of interest to my brother, and non

of the photos were distasteful (opinion, of course).  Their address is;

http://www.canoeing.org/

Also, thanks a bunch for the Potomac info. My brother is in Tennessee

and I'm in Virginia. He wanted to go to Maryland or Pennsylvania

because he hasn't been in that part of the East Coast, but for the right

trip, perhaps I can convince him to stay a bit closer to home :-)

Thanks again.

Rick

Trying to access the URL, I got this message a couple times. Must be some very
"tasteful" photos there, Paddlewisers! Or, some of you are "lingering" a
while!
