I keep a separate e-mail account for Paddlewise, and the spam was on the main account. -- Wes --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd's Kayak Place http://www2.dmci.net/wesboyd/kayak.htm Kayaks for Big Guys (And Gals) | Trip Reports | Places To Go | Boats & Gear --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I would appreciate it if you or anyone else who's been spammed would forward the spam itself -- but it has to include the full headers, otherwise I can't use it -- to me at this address: abuse_at_rockandwater.net As some of you know, I've been active in the anti-spam/anti-abuse area for a number of years; I will do my best to put this information to good use. About the "full headers" thing: that allows me and other folks to trace the message back to its origin. It's a necessary part of spam-tracking. There's a nice guide to "how to view the full headers on your email messages" with instructions for all sorts of email clients here: http://www.claws-and-paws.com/spam-l/ Go to that URL and then under section 3, look for the fourth item, which is a link that reads: How can I view the headers with mail client X? Follow that link and you'll get the info for Outlook, Pegasus and about a dozen other mail clients. The rest of the FAQ has lots of other useful info on figuring out who spammed you, blocking spam, and so on. ---Rsk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Hey all, I've also received several paddling related mass e-mails the past couple days. But also to an account I don't use for Paddlewise. Makes me wonder if REI or someone is selling its database. I don't think it is coming from Paddlwise. -Patrick *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Coincidently, there is a thread on the Guillemot forum with a number of article from people there that received the spam, and they're wondering if it has anything to do with their participation on the BBS. I haven't seen it. Don't shop at REI. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). A lady from WetDawg contacted me several weeks ago. She had read my Tebenkof article in the Paddlewise archives and asked permission to put it on their web site...I agree and was somewhat flattered. I also appreciated their asking permission Bob *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). If she had posted without permission. I would have notified their ISP that they were posting copyrighted material to their site. Every post has a copyright they would need to remove prior to posting the article. WetDawg neglected to put a copyright on Bob's article on their site, although they do list him as the author. Rehashing list policy: Posting or forwarding any paddlewise postings without permission is strictly against the rules of the list. If you do it, and get caught, you will be dropped from the mailing list and blocked from rejoining. kirk list wonk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I don't *think* this is coming from REI; they don't have the email address at which I received this spam. But it's possible that it's coming from someone else's database, or possibly from multiple databases, or possibly from someone who's crawled the rec.boats.paddle archive at Google. Hopefully I'll get enough reports (at abuse_at_rockandwater.net) that I'll have some chance of figuring out who's responsible, where they got the list, and how to make sure that they never do this again. ---Rsk *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Well I haven't received anything from WetDawg and I do regular business with REI over the internet. So far I have never had a problem with spam from REI. I don't think it is REI or Paddlewise. -- MZ visit my website: http://www.mzuschlag.com > ********* *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
