I am not a kayaker. I am a member of the Leukemia Society Regatta
Committee, Hampton Roads, VA, Chapter. We are having the regatta in
July in Deltaville, VA.
Last year we offered an event to kayakers to give them a chance to raise
money for the cause. We had some participants. This year we want to
attract even more. I have been given the task of figuring out some
event that could be incorporated with the paddle this year that would be
fun and educational. We launch from Middlesex Co., VA and paddle out to
a private island in the Piankatank River and eat, drink and get merry.
I thought about a scavenger hunt along the way, but it has it's draw
backs. Can anyone give me some ideas for events that could incorporate
fund raising, be fun and educational? I would appreciate all and every
idea.

Thanks.
Sara

Have you ever heard of a "Poker Run"? They're fairly popular as club
events. On the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta I've seen groups of
power boaters participating is such an event. Essentially, everyone
travels from 5 to 7 locations and eventually meets up at a final
location. At each stop, every "competitor" picks up a playing card, and
once everyone arrives at the final location the person with the best hand
wins some sort of prize. In the example I witnessed all of the stops
happened to be bars along the river so as each card was picked up it was
usually accompanied with a drink or two.

A friend of mine attempted to run a dart tournament along the same course
that had each player stop at a bar and pick up a card, and play a game, at
the end of the day the player with the best poker hand won something, as
did the player with the highest combined score. Then she ran a dart
tournament with all the players at the final location. I didn't
participate but I heard it got pretty sloppy.

Something like a poker run, but without the alcohol, might make an
interesting activity, especially if the stops were a bit hidden such that
they required a bit of navigation to find. Another variation could be done
with the road rally type concept. Each paddler would not only have to find
each waypoint, but they'd have to arrive with a certain window of time to
get a card punched.
If some sort of navigation is involved, separate groups for GPS and non GPS
users could be created.
