Thank you for making } this list happen! Hi John, Jolie, Well, yes, it does cost us money. Computer equipment, domain name registration, and most of all a full-time Internet connection with a dedicated IP address. When we started out we had it hosted at my company, an ISP where I was a minor partner, but we eventually sold the company and had to move the kayak mailing lists and websites somewhere else last summer - so we just set it up at home. Most of the equipment and the Internet link is multiple use, though; not much is really dedicated just to Paddlewise, though we'd probably get by with less if we didn't have Paddlewise to think about. It all started with the California Kayak Friends in 1995, with both a mailing list and a website, then my wife Jackie set up GASP! (Gulf Area Sea Paddlers) before she moved to California. Then the Wave~Length list and Kirk's Baidarka list needed new homes, and I volunteered to host them. I personally ran Wave~Length for a while in 1997 but dropped out over a major disagreement over how to handle Sponsonman. Shortly thereafter Jackie set up Paddlewise in January 1998 since she really felt we needed a semi-moderated kayak group to keep the flames down - especially the sponsonman-induced flames. Last summer we moved everything onto our home server, and of course recently Kirk took over Paddlewise from Jackie. It's been a long paddle, but fun. Thanks for the appreciation; this has been my contribution to the kayaking community and I'm glad you've enjoyed it. I've kept a fairly low profile since the days I ran Wave~Length; tech support should be as invisible as possible generally, IMHO. I think this last weekend is the longest outage we've had in 7 years. Sorry about that, again.
