I've done that with trout in the California Sierras, just skewer them 
lengthwise on a stick.  I leave the heads on, I don't gut or clean them, I 
remove the unwanted parts after they are cooked.  I have also done that with 
grunion on the So. Calif. beaches.

I'm not sure about other marine fish, they may taste too fishy.
