I'm helping plan a trip down the upper delaware river with a few people
(one of them is my bosses boss) and wondered if someone could describe the
section from Hancock down to Skinner's falls.

The guy that originally started planning it wants to run the trip in his
sea kayak (a Prijon Seayak) and my bosses boss wants to do it in her Walden
Passage. From what I've seen from web sites it looks like this section
would certainly be doable. However, neither one of them has a lot of
experience (no roll, minimal bracing skills). Does this sound like a
good/bad idea? Any suggestions?

That's about a 25-30 miles... For potentially inexperienced paddlers
that's a long run. That portion is not too bad, but Skinner's is rated a
Class 2 and it definitely requires good boat control and river reading skills.
It and Foul Rift below Belvidere NJ are about the toughest on the river.
Otherwise there are 1+ rapids here and there but nothing a sea kayak couldn't
navigate.

With the exception of Skinners' and possibly Shohola or Cedar where
things can get pretty shallow, a roll is not really necessary, but a good wet
exit might be. Bracing is always helpful. For the most part lines are clear
and broad.

For shorter runs, try Narrowsburg down to Lackawaxen, or Pond Eddy to
Sparrowbush. The latter is rather scenic; you'll have some excitement at the
Mongaup Wave, and it's about 12 miles, expandable to 16 if you continue to
Matamoras.

Followup report says the child was wearing a PFD; the adult's PFD was
stuffed up under the foredeck. Draw your own conclusions.

That's one of my regular paddling spots, and I can assure you that I
almost never see anyone in a rented boat or a recrational kayak wearing
a PFD. That's pretty much true of the entire Huron River system, on
which Kent Lake is located. It's a pleasant, slow moving river with
numerous dammed ponds and lakes, and a surprising number of drownings
every year.

Kent Lake itself is a marvelous place to paddle, being over 1000 acres
in size with numerous islands. There is a strictly enforced speed limit
for all watercraft and no PWCs. It also has a long enough fetch that on
windy days you can get 2' waves. It's in the middle of a couple of
popular Metroparks so it's not quite the wilderness experience, but on a
given day you can still see lots of herons, hawks, swans, ducks and the
occasional eagle.
