Another problem with certain types of sandals is that prolonged wearing of them can cause serious foot infections. I worked for Outward Bound in Maine a decade or so back, and they refused to pay workman's comp to anyone out with foot problems who wore any of the popular sorts of boating sandals. Depending on the environment in which they are worn, I believe sandals can *prevent* infections caused by improper airing of the feet, such as trench foot. They do not, however, prevent abrasions and punctures that might lead to other infections as well as boots do. Note: In part I have been making a virtue out of necessity. Besides my problem finding sports footwear that fits my feet as well as sandals do, I have an old ski injury -- apparently a torn tendon -- in my right ankle that can flare up when I wear close-fitting high-top shoes or boots.
