When I had my boat stolen some time back I was upset to lose my favorite
boat, but figured my homeowners insurance would cover it. So I checked with
my friendly insurance agent only to learn that "recreational" watercraft was
not covered! Not only that, but even if it was, apparently "tools" you use
for work are not covered either, and since I work on and off on the weekends
as a kayak instructor it means that my boats and kayaking equipment are not
covered regardless! Who knew? And the punch line to this whole story is that
my friendly insurance agent is my father!!!!! It's not like he doesn't know I
do a lot of kayaking and stuff. Anyway, I found out that to cover my
equipment would, over the years, cost more then it's worth. So it's still not
covered. But at least now I know.

When I inquired about this with my insurance agent, I was told my boats were
covered against theft and "property damage" as part of my homeowners
coverage. Although, knock on fiberglass, I haven't had to file any claims -
yet.

I called my agent today just to see what coverage we
had. I was told basically the same - away from the
house the coverage is 10% of the personal property
coverage (which is some calculated percentage of your
house coverage amount). Unless you have a *much*
smaller house than our very little app 150 yr old one,
even your more valuable boats should be covered.

Take what your insurance agent says with a grain of salt. Ask them to
show you where in your insurance policy it talks about kayak/boat
coverage and read it for yourself. It does not matter what they tell
you that counts rather what is documented in your insurance policy when
it comes time for you to make a claim.

My agent said that the boats are covered by my homeowners insurance but
wanted an inventory of all of them with value. Rather a long list, I'm afraid.

Yeah, my agent thought that my boats were covered by the homeowners as
well --- until I filed a claim and we both found out otherwise. If your agent
believes that you are covered, then ask him if you can get it in writing.
Your agent shouldn't have any problem honoring this request.

Good luck!

Perhaps this thread is a bit long and scraggly by now...
But I can't think of a more appropriate instance where
"Your Mileage May vary" connects with "Get it in WRITING".

I have a special rider on my homeowner's policy to cover
items I use professionally...computer gear for my writing and
teaching...musical gear for my income as a working musician.
I am covered, partially, by homeowners for any and all of these items under
certain circumstances...but to be sure I am covered for replacement value
under the widest array vs. acceptable risk, I have specific riders and I pay
extra. I've had to file on stolen laptops, amplifiers destroyed by
airlines, etc. and my riders have been worth every penny. They are also
part of my tax claim against income.

My kayak and related gear is a significant expense. Even if it depreciates
in 'actual' value, my replacement cost escalates. My rider covers a wide
array of damage, vandalism and theft. You pays your money, you takes your
chances. Assume what you want or what your field agent tells you over the
phone if you'd like, but you take your chances there, too.

An alternate practice might be to set aside a like dollar amount that you'd
pay in premiums to a special 'kayak protection & replacement fund"...you're
betting that you'll save as much to replace before an actual theft or
incident occurs, and the money never leaves your access or control.

Re: boat insurance

To check this out, I called my State Farm agent who called both the
regional office and the national claims office. In North Carolina, my
State Farm homeowners policy covers theft or other loss on the premises
only up to $1000/boat. There is no coverage once I drive out of my driveway
and no coverage associated with my car insurance policy: rack is covered,
kayak isn't. To get a separate $3500 (replacement coverage) boat owners
policy for my P&H Quest from State Farm would cost me $240/year. Anyone
know of any specialty insurance agencies that could do better than this?

John
