I keep my Garmin GPS 12XL in a clear, waterproof pouch under a pair of bungie cords on my foredeck, where I can see and operate it. The pouch adds flotation. Also, the cord on the pouch is stronger than that on the GPS unit itself. For extra security, I loop the pouch cord around the nearest bungie cord.
