I am strongly considering purchasing a Sierra Designs Meteor Light CD tent. Anyone out there with an opinion on this tent, solo tent size during layovers due to weather, free standing tents in general, or Sierra Designs? I have done my research and have simply been waiting for the 2002 line to go on clearance before posting these questions to PaddleWise. REI has them for $189.00. Ronnie you aren't allowed to comment. Your idea of a good nights rest in the winter is a sheet of 4 mil plastic overhead and a piece of foam cut to your profile underneath. Homeless people sleep with more protection you ugly bear. To your credit you could successfully create a shelter out of a trash bag, copious saliva and half a carton of coffee cups.......

I've had a Sierra Designs Half Moon, a similar model, for some years now and I
think it's a terrific tent. Easy to put up, stays up in heavy wind, and does
a reasonable job of heat retention in cold weather. I've had no problems,
except one; the tent fly coating started to stick to itself, but somehow
seemed to be waterproof anyway.

I queried Sierra Designs via their website about that.... It took them
Five Months(!) to respond. Basically they said Gee, they didn't know what
could have caused that so didn't know what to do, but I could always buy
another one from them. I'm still using the original, and it still keeps water
out....

Nonetheless, I would recommend the brand...

Sierra Designs must be undergoing a design change or something. Take a look
at:

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/prod_list_display.ASP?wrotecookie=true&
dept_id=L2~322&dept_name_p=Outdoor+Gear

price $161.80 - quite a deal.

I have an older Sierra Designs and they are a great affordable tent.
Last summer, a camp I was in was hit by a sudden wind storm. Tents
went flying everywhere and many were completely destroyed by buckled
and snapped poles. The Sierra Designs tent had nary a ripple on the
surface and moved not at all. I've heard that wind test them on Mount
Washington or some such.

I also got mine a year before they redesigned them and don't regret
it. Another paddling friend has had an SD tent for a dozen years and
it is still going strong. He just had the zippers replaced for $15 or
so and doesn't see why it won't last another dozen years.

SD tents don't come seam-sealed, or at least they didn't used to. So
be sure and seal the seams. I would also recommend making or buying a
lightweight footprint as it will really add to the life of the tent.
Especially if you ever end up camping on a bunch of pine needles and
sap!
