Some of us are looking into an unguided 10 day kayak trip on the Yukon river, paddling in seakayaks, from Whitehorse to Dawson (I could have those reversed--but we'll be launching from whichever one is up-stream!) starting in early-to-mid July. Can anyone on the list done who has done this trip share any suggestions regarding transportation (so far, we're looking at $200 each to shuttle the 400 mile return trip back to the starting point), kayak rental places (since we will be flying in), what the conditions are like, hazards [whether in the water or from bears/cougars/wolves (or mosquitoes!) etc.], required portages, camps, and perhaps additional sources of information? Are we crazy to do this unguided (given that none of us has been there before--we are reasonable proficient paddlers)??? Any information will be much appreciated!
