First off, I want to thank the list for all their comments on the use
of helmets in surf conditions. I'll be heading out to the
(southeast) coast this summer and I will be bringing my helmet.
Being new to kayaking (started last spring) I learn a lot from the
discussions on this list.

I'm about to purchase a used VCP Pintail with ocean cockpit and I'll
looking for sprayskirt recommendations. As I'm in Colorado, I don't
have lots of choices when it comes to shops that stock paddling
equipment. Thus, while I can order almost anything through one of
these shops or online, I can't try it out first. I like the one I'm
using now on my current boat (a CD Storm): a Snap Dragon Sea Tour.
I'm considering the Snap Dragon Glacier because the suspender buckles
are uncomfortable in some positions.

Thanks,
Brian Curtiss

I'm happy with my Brooks (Fitted Waist Touring) sprayskirt. It fits my
Ellesmere's ocean cockpit (and my waist) really well, and at $82US
they're not a bad deal.

Cross the straps in front. That makes the buckles lie flat. Love Snap Dragon
nylon tunnel, neo deck. They do custom for the same price as stock.

That's what I heard, but they charged me an extra ten or twenty bucks to
fit a custom combing.

My well-used -- bought new -- Pintail has two skirts. An all-neoprene Seals skirt and a Palm neo/nylon hybrid. Both great, but the Palm is an outstanding skirt. (Have two others for different sized rims on other boats.) Also can recommend Mountain Surf's products: have their "dry deck" dry top and skirt combo that is outstanding. Had to be made for the rim, but they've done some in stock recently. (Palm also makes -- or possibly "made" -- a neoprene skirt with a "farmer john" style top to it in ocean cockpit sizes.

One caution: I've noticed that, over a period of about 12 years, the "ocean cockpit" rim actually shrinks down to the point that skirts look like tutus.
