Hi All-

I got an email from my cousin who is planning a trip down under for
July. She will be in Darwin on business, but will have time after to
tour around a little. In particular, she is interested in the sea
kayaking the Queensland coast. Anyone done any kayaking there? Can
you steer her towards particular destinations, recommend an
outfitter/guide, or know of a kayak club that could help her out?

Here is her original query:

"The conference is in Darwin but we want to spend a week or so on a
coastline, and (of course) a sea kayaking trip seems ideal. We're
thinking of a guided trip because of the complications of logistics
(not to mention our ignorance), probably on the order of 5-7 days long,
and location is still flexible but leaning towards Queensland/Great
Barrier Reef. I'm interested in whether you can recommend any (1)
locations (off-the-beaten track with good beaches and snorkeling), (2)
guide companies, or (3) a name of someone we can ask for inside
knowledge. I always feel a bit lost and vulnerable to ripoffs when
resorting to what the guidebooks tell me."

She would like it if you would reply to her directly at:
janet.ohmann_at_orst.edu

Thanks in advance!

G'day Sarah,

One part of Queensland which has very good kayaking and where it is easy to
hire kayaks, is the Whitsundays. This is a beautiful group of Islands near
the southern tip of the barrier reef. You would not see the best of the reef
but the islands are great. The reef might be most conveniently explored in a
glass bottomed boat or on a snorkelling or dive trip from Cairns. These used
not to be too expensive and trips can be as short as one day. July is a good
time of year to visit as the temperature will be tolerable if she is from a
cold climate.

I'm no expert on Queensland. However, my local club, the "New South Wales
Sea Kayak Club" should have plenty of information - If you will allow it I
could pass your email on to their chatline. Their web page is: -
http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/

Please let us know if your friend is passing through Sydney - we would be
delighted to find her a boat and take her out with our group the
"Commodores".

All the best, PeterO
