Thanks to all who replied to my post about the Apostle Islands: I'm currently
in information overload (a good deal - any more advice welcomed!).

One thing I hadn't adequately comprehended was the need to have a marine
radio, so here I go again: any suggestions on which brand and model are amenable
to kayaking?

Thanks again - what a great resource this list is.

The brand and model that I use as well as most of my friends is the
Standard HX350. Seems to be the most trouble free of the ones we've all
tried.

Whichever brand you decide on, you may wish to seriously consider the
following criteria:

1. JS7 submersible rating
2. 5W output with clear sounding speaker and microphone
3. Easy to use buttons or dials, and clear readout.
4. Sized to wear it in a place convenient to speak from. (You may wish to
consider that when you actually need it as seas may be a bit lumpy. *Uh, guys,
I'm way back here, can y'all slow down just a smidge.*) I wear mine from a loop
on the left shoulder strap of my pfd. It is very easy to hear and speak from.
5. A separate battery tray that takes AA's. It sucks being on a trip and day
5 finds you with low battery power. They have yet to make Douglas Fir or
Western Hemlock with 110V convenience outlets.

Raytheon, Icom, Uniden and many other brands are quite good. I own a Uniden
and an Icom with excellent operational histories. Try to find the one you like
best, with the characteristics that you think are suitable.

I may have posted this question before but since the handheld VHF ? has
again risen...

Has anyone had experience with the Uniden Voyager VHF radio? This is a
very small handheld VHF - the size of some FRS/GMRS radios - and seems to
meet most (all?) of the criteria that Rick posted - plus it is in a tiny
little package. Would seem perfect for paddling - more apt to always have
it along if it is small. Advertised as "the worlds smallest VHF marine
radio". Somebody out there MUST have some experience with this....more

That's the one I use, and like it fine. I've never needed to use it in
an emergency, though (fortunately), so can only recommend it based on my
use of it in calm, controlled conditions. Maybe someone else has used
it in life threatening situations and can comment on it's ease of use
when other things are going badly - in the water getting pounded with
cold water, numb fingers, etc.

Icom M1-V. On sale at times for as little as $169. List is usually
$189. JIS-7 submersible, Li-Ion batteries. Small form factor. Very
nice. Have one, love it, wouldn't trade it.

We used one during our rescue off the Storm Islands a few years back. It was
either an ICOM or a Standard water proof model of earlier vintage. Cold
hands, bloody jumbled seas, numb-numb brains, exhaustion/dehydration, etc.
No problems using it, however, initial broadcasting was done on 1- watt.
Silly boys. Kind of hard to get a Mayday out on 1- watt. After a time the
paddler/operator switched to 5 watts. Contact established. Radio was
half-discharged, but lasted long enough for combined Military/Coast
Guard/merchant marine response. So, keep those radio's charged up, and while
its nice to be a participant on the water with other boaters by listening in
all day, make sure you have enough reserve juice to see you through any
potential time-lag emergency. And switch to 5 watt for transmission, at
least initially. Carry flares, blah blah blah...
