Has anyone had any experience with kayak covers? I'll be picking up a new CD
Gulfstream next month, and because we travel full-time in an RV, the boat
will travel and be stored atop my pickup. I'm thinking that a cover will protect
it (primarily road grime & UV). I've found a couple on the net (The Kayak
Cover Company, in Maine; and Tough Duck, B.C.) and am looking for some
recommendations.

If you don't get a kayak cover at least get a cockpit cover, especially if
your boat travels in saddles. It keeps the cockpit clean - no grit, no bugs
(especially spiders) and no rain water. I have a CD Gulfstream with an Old
Town cockpit cover that fits just fine. One word of caution. I had one
blow off on the NJ Turnpike. Now I secure the cover by threading the
tie-down strap through the cover's front grab loop. The bungee knot at the
back of the cover I pull under the rear tie-down strap before I tighten it.
A simple system that works. Also, if you don't go with a cover, apply a
liberal coating of 303 UV protectant. Not only does it provide UV
protection but it also makes the boat a cinch to wash down.
The Gulfstream is one very fine kayak (unsolicited testimonial).

We bought short webbing straps which we buckled over
the front grab loop. Originally we buckled these to
the bungees but we have found that just placing them
under the bungee with the buckle bacing forward will
hold quite well. This has been proven to work a few
times already.

3 non-answers, but some feedback on what I've liked in the covers I do
own.

I've got 5 canoes/kayaks with covers.

The 3 canoes all have covers from "The Bag Lady"
http://www.waterworkscanoe.com/canoe_covers.html Nice design and the bags
have held up well. Alas I don't think she makes kayak bags.

I have a terry cloth cover for my old surf ski. Dakine made it. I
really don't like the bag. It slips on like a giant sock, which is fine
if the boat is dry but annoying when the boat is wet. The terry cloth
also hasn't held up well and snags on the boats fittings when I put it
on.

I have a nice zipper bag for my surf ski, the bag is specifically for the
boat and I highly doubt it would fit other boats.
http://www.oceanpaddlesports.com/accessories.html The bag is reflective
on the outside and has a "soft felt" lining. It also has a full length
zipper, that starts from both ends so I can zip from both ends to the
rudder, leaving the rudder exposed. So far I'm very happy with this bag,
although I don't know how long it will last as the bag is an almost
perfect fit for the boat and I would have liked an extra inch or two in
length. I would use this bag as a model as I hunted for a bag.

Oh, yes, the other kayak covers I've seen are pricey. I paid about $100
for each canoe cover, $35 (on ebay) for the dakine cover, and $80 for the
surf ski specific bag.

I didn't read the bag lady's website well enough:
"Psst... Don't tell but the Bag Lady is starting to make kayak bags too.
Call her."

I haven't seen one of her kayak bags. I've been happy with her canoe
covers.

Some cockpit covers have a small snap hook at the front end that can be
connected to a deck line or D-ring. I had a cockpit cover loosen and would
have lost it on the NY Thruway except for that hook.

Chuck,

I too just use a cockpit cover on my Gulfstream and like Bill, I also thread
a tiedown strap through the grab loop as I have also lost a cover to high
winds on the freeway.

The brand I use is made by Xtreamline (a local kayak shop). It was about
$15 - $20 and works very well. I also use Turtle UV protectorant or 303 on
the boat and hatches..

Enjoy your GS - it is a sweet boat.

My Gulfstream and My Breeze use the same size cockpit covers. I just tied
hooks to the grab loops and hook them to the deck lines. I lost one off
another boat years ago, now I just see the shadow of the flapping in the
wind, so I have another chance to put it on right and not have to plunk out
$25+ on a new cover.
The covers keep out all kinds of things including critters looking for
winter digs, bugs looking for a nice place out of the sun (boats in a
covered rack), and cats looking for a place to have kittens.
