Anyone suggestions on best way to light a deck mounted compass on my Romany?
It's in a deck recessed mount just forward of front hatch. All ideas
welcomed.

Thought I had an good idea, until I tried it during recent BCU 5 Star
training in Georgia.

Thanks
John Browning

I use a strap on Suunto Orca placed on deck just above my kneecaps. I think I
paid 35 or 40 bucks for it. I wouldn't want my forward compass to be
illuminated as I'd have no choice but to look at the thing all the time. To illuminate
my compass I use a simple LED with a red jewel cap on it. It slides under the
housing and clips onto the shock cord. It is powered by watch batteries. I
have no idea who makes it as there are no markings on the case. Perhaps they
should fire their marketing and PR person. It's probably made by the same company
that makes the little LED night sticks. You know, the one that also has no
markings of manufacturer or origin. Fire that guy, too. Anyway, both my LED
night stick and the separate jewel cap LED burn a long, long time and are totally
waterproof.

I saw a lot of Silva strap on compasses on my recent 5 star training and they
looked not only expensive but really heavy. I thought the red night light was
a bit too bright,as well.

Could this be the little jewel LED light you are using?:

G'Day,

Just finished the Hawkesbury Classic a couple of hours ago. Its an overnight
paddle where the principal means of locating your position is compass
readings and very effective it was too. But in reply to your question
whatever lights your compas should light your map. If this sounds too
obvious forgive me I'm still light headed from the paddle.

All the best, PeterO

That is the light. The light, without the snap on clip, fits under the Suunto
Orca strap on compass. I use a fine velcro tie down to keep it centered under
the compass and secure to the shock cords.
