I had my maps spread across the floor the other night planning my summer trip.
What else is a paddler to do on a windy storm night? (everone except Doug that
is) I am planning a 14 day, 150 to 200 miles circumnavigation of Kupreanoff
Island (pronounced Koop re nof) starting where I live in Petersburg. The
variation in miles depends on how much exploring the weather lets me do. I
want to go to the Brothers Islands in Fredrick Sound but the long open
crossings (8 - 14 miles depending on the route) may be vetoed by the weather.
Fredrick Sound can really blow.
I got to wondering where you folks are planning to paddle this summer?

What a great topic!

I'm not sure where I'll end up going, but my wish list of places to paddle
includes:
1) the south coast of Baffin from Cape Dorset to Lake Harbour.
2) northeastern Foxe Basin, a fjord-like place again on Baffin Island on
Baffin called Eqe where caribou come in August to fatten up for winter.
3) circumnavigate the province of Prince Edward Island.

and do it all in my SOF!

At this point, I'd settle for something besides Lake Hudson for the
thousandth time. I'm still paying for my Grand Canyon trip last spring.

If things work out, if I can do it on a strict budget and if I can find
someone to go with me, possibly whale watching in Quebec, or messing around
in the upper reaches of Lake Huron. Hopefully, I will be able to take my
daughter, if she can get free from school and summer internship -- we've
wanted to take a trip together for years, but the chance just hasn't come
up, and it's very iffy this year.

In the meantime, I only can sit back and dream about places I probably
never will be able to go . . . like the Inside Passage.

Aside from our usual trips locally - the Hudson River, Connecticut rivers,
Long Island Sound, etc., we don't have any specific plans just yet. But we
are planning on paddling in Baja in February. (Not to mention in the pool
every Wednesday night until the outside waters warm up,

Three week trip through the Grand Canyon. First time since 1991, really
looking forward to it.

One week in Lake Powell with adjudicated youth.

One week in Lake Fontana area, North Carolina. Lots of TVA lakes to play
in.

Usual weekends on the Mississippi River in Illinois.

A different sort of destination list for '04 from the midwest...

Missouri River in South Dakota - Pierre to Chamberlain. Possible side trip
into the Cheyenne River to do a bit of fossil hunting

Return to Voyageurs National Park in the fall (might choose the N and NE
end of Rainy Lake - across the border into crown land)

Apostle Islands / Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Mississippi River (local MN/WI)

Also, I've always thought it would be fun to do a lazy bed-and-breakfast to
bed-and-breakfast trip down the Rideau Canal Waterway in Ontario - most
likely a power boaters' playground. There is some info at:

http://www.rideau-info.com/canal/welcome.html

Won't happen this year though. Anyone personally have any info on this area?

Comin' up your way, Bob. We just signed up for 10 days in Prince William
Sound in August. The company we went to the Lofoten Islands with 2 years
ago, Crossing Latitudes, is doing a semi-exploratory and asked us along.

Any advice you could offer would be appreciated.

I am inclined to do as much of the West arm as I can in the time allotted
(10 days . . . but huge gawk factor). I have gone over Don Skillman's book
in some detail, along with several maps (as well as much Alaska material on
other areas). Any suggestions would be welcome. (I have always enjoyed
your trip reports.)

Tom,
I have been I the West Arm but not the East. Those I know who have done both
recommend the West so I think you are making a good choice. Two quick
suggestions:
The wind blows cold off the glaciers so bring plenty of warm clothes.
We you paddle up through icelden waters toward the glaciers only do so on a
falling tide. It is easy to get trapped in by a rising tide which clumps the
ice together...a possible deadly situation

I know you will enjoy your trip

Bob

Steve,
Prince William Sound is a big place. Where exactly will you be paddling?
August can be a rainy time in PWS so be prepared to paddle in the rain and
camp in the rain.
Also a lot of the Glaciers are very active and calve huge chunks of ice.
Avoid the temptation of paddling too close lest you get slamed by the ice.
If you hear a voice in your head saying "come on Steve you can come
closer than that", ignore it! Backpaddle fast! It is the voice of the Ring
Of Power luring you to Mordor. "Remember the Ring wants to be found."
(Gandalf)
Oops sorry, I got carried away a little there didn't I.
Seriously PWS is a wonderful place top paddle but at the same time a wet
and wild place so be prepared and enjoy

Steve, A little futher info on Prince Willaim Sound:

National Geographic put out a series of maps titled " Trails Illustrated
Maps" The Prince William Sound West covers the area you are planning to
paddle. It is a great resource. I got my copy at REI but you might check out
www.nationalgeographic.com The map is waterproof so it is protected from
drooling as you study all the places you can paddle.
The map includes camping sites and "kayak landing beaches".
As you plan your itenery be sure to include a weather day. It is especially
windy in the Whittier area. In fact I think they should change the name to
Windy-er Alaska.
Which outfitter are you planning to us?
Have fun

I have paddled all of the above except Nellie Juan. Blackstone and
Harriman Fjord are incredible places. If I were going back I would chose
Harriman by the slightest margins over Blackstone. Mainly because Harriman
has a campsite on a black sand beach at the foot of the Coxe Glacier that
affords a spectaculer view of three tide water glaciers.
I have written two trip reports one my trips to both these areas. I
posted both on paddlewise about a year and a half ago. Both are long but if
you want I can back channel them to you.
if I can help you plan let me know
