I'm considering keeping my boat on the trailer this summer for ease of use
- hopefully I'll paddle more that way!. Wondering about a sun cover for
it. I'd hate to use one of those dreadfully ugly cheap blue or green
plastic tarps but....will these protect my boat (plastic) from UV / heat
damage? How about 8 oz canvas - light colored? Local home center has
canvas drop cloths that are 4 x 15 - would need two to get the needed
length but would be inexpensive. I don't care if it stays dry - just have
to keep the sun off.

Thanks for any suggestions,
K

Do you want a close fitting cover?
A hard top on the trailer would probable be better than any cloth cover
but cloth covers will work and are used widely on bigger boats.

A breathable fabric is good and the best is Sunbrella. It is not cheap
but it looks great and will last for many years. It can also be bought
in a piece long enough to make a one piece cover and can be sewn easily
on a home machine.

One source of material and instruction how to use it is;

If you use blue tarp or similar, it is better to keep it from touching
the boat to prevent condensation damage.

The material used to make boat covers (sunbrella?) would be ideal. They may
have it in a lighter weight. It will definitely hold up to the UV.

  Keith,

You might try making a cover out of PVC. It's polyester cloth coated both
sides with vinyl and comes in many colors, including white.( Same material as
many dry bags) Not only will it look better than a polytarp, it is more
durable and much better looking. Try "Mauritzon Inc" in Chicago. I use the
18oz "Coverlight" for the skins on my folders, so it's sure to make a good
cover for your boats. They may have even lighter PVC for your application,
though 18oz is plenty light. Coat is only about $5.00 per yard, and can be
sewn or glued. If you glue it, use HH-66 Vinyl cement.

Of course they will. These polyethilene tarps are also available in camo,
if this feels better :-). Being a poly, it can't be glued, but can be sewed
or welded.

HeJ Keith

Good and cheap, disregarded yachting sails work real good for any tarping,
Most of the time they come for free.

I bought covers from Jersey Paddler. Not cheap, but very good quality.
