Anybody carrying kayaks on a car with a moon roof? Does a moon roof
weaken the roof enough to cause any problems with the additional
stresses of carrying boats at high speeds and potential winds? Or,
should that topic be a non-issue when car shopping?

Thanks,

Rick

Thanks, Rick. Now I've got something else to worry about. <g>

I have a 95 Subaru Legacy with Thule bars and two sets of their J-racks. I
carry 16' to 17' kayaks on either side, squeeze a WS Piccolo in between
and drive as fast as can from Pennsylvania to places like Virginia,
North Carolina, etc. Of course, some of that time is spent creeping around
D.C. on I-95, but otherwise after several trips over several years, I've
had no problems. I _do_ tie down all boats at both ends.

Rick --

Moon roofs are kind of handy to keep an eye on the kayaks and the
tie-down lines. It's nice to be able to slide open the shade and see
how the kayaks are doing. I've driven two boats at interstate speeds
across several states with no problems.

The need for extra cross members to box in the hole probably make the
roof stronger, if anything. After all, you are not attaching to the
sheet metal roof, and even that would be stronger because it is not the
same large continuous sheet.

I understand that you can take your car down logging roads to get to the
coast just north of Brooks Peninsula on Vancouver Island.

Does anyone know if there have been problems with vandalism in this area?
Are there alternatives nearby? We have been at other places where it has
been possible to pay someone to watch your car (ie park it on their land:
(for example at San Joseph Bay). If there anyplace around there where
someone will watch your car?

We had a rack on a Mercury with a moon roof for several years with no
difficulties. I imagine that a lot would depend on the dimensions of any
particular vehicle, but for any rack that I've ever used, the feet are
placed at the outside edge of the roof -- where it is strong. YMMV

My current car doesn't have a moon roof, largely because I decided that it's
not worth spending the extra money for it if you're going to put kayak racks
on the car. I had a moon roof on my previous car,a Mercury Mystique. I had
no problems, but I did find that having the racks on the car created so much
noise that it was no fun to ride with the moon roof open. It was actually
somewhat better (better, but not actually good...) when the kayak was on the
car. For some reason, it was less noisy then.
