I'm living in Northern Wisconsin. At the end of August it has become apparent that an early May start does not get me in condition fast enough for a long summer trip, when the schedule only allows me to paddle a couple of hours once or twice a week. Any suggestions for a good conditioning routine for the off season and off days? I have not sen any good books on the subject. I used to find cross country skiing to be a great off season conditioner. It does the cardio, the arms, the legs and the torso. With a head lamp it can be done after dark on prepared trails. Unfortunately, we haven't had much snow for four years. That shouldn't be a problem in northern Wisconsin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- When logic and proportion Have fallen softly dead, Remember what the dormouse said: "Feed your head. Although I do not ski, I have heard that skiers do training in the summer with wheeled skis. Might be interesting. -----Original Message----- From: owner-paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net [mailto:owner-paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net]On Behalf Of WhiteRabbit Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 2:56 PM To: paddlewise_at_paddlewise.net Subject: Re: [Paddlewise] Conditioning routine? Yes, I have a great suggestion, although it's a bit pricey. We just bought a device called SpeedStroke. Actually, someone on this list had mentioned it, and we followed up and wound up buying one. You can see it at this link - there's even a video that will give you a very good idea of how it works. http://www.pogies.com/speedstroke/html/index.htm If you decide that you want more information, and you write to the e-mail address, you'll meet an ex-Olympic sprinter named Grayson Bourne. Tell him I said "hello." Joan Volin >> Any suggestions for a good conditioning routine for the off season and off > days? Worked for me, but I only made it to the world championships. Or be really cheap and put pulley weights in your basement wall. Jim, I tried the Speedstroke at a local Paddlefest, thought it was a cute idea, but almost fell off the apparatus when I heard the price! I thought the person was joking. Currently I'm using the The Firm's Stick. It has weights on the end and you can practice several different strokes and stroke combinations. It can be used for several different strength and endurance exercise as well. It is more versatile than the SpeedStroke. It is also about one 20th the price!
