Duane,

I can see the fine form of that boat trying to get out. All you have to do
is remove a little material in the right places to finish the job.

I can tell this builder is a purist, as there is no rudder on this new kayak
design.
My other question is how does it perform in whitewater?

I guess that you could call that a new, fast build, sit on top design.

I like the boat, but for the paddle I think you could do better than
2x4 you found floating on the beach.

Nick,

I laughed extra hard about the 2x4 comment, because I read the debate you where in about greenlander vs. euro paddles on the Greenland Kayak Forum.

That block of foam was just sitting on the beach, and we were all laughing about it, so I took it for a spin. I think the foam floated away from a dock that was under construction.

I'd always thought it was a myth that the original kayakers put their old folks out to sea on ice flows when times were tough. At least this codger seems happy to go!

In response to an earlier thread about paddling opportunities in El Segundo
someone mentioned that the availability of rental my be limited to
sit-on-tops but that's not quite what I expected. At first I thought it
might be a square ice berg (is it true that 2/3rds of it is underwater) or
a giant sugar cube.

Dave Kruger" <kdruger_at_pacifier.com> asked:

>>>>>What's the block coefficient on that thing, Duane?<<<<<<

Dave, any fool can see that Duane got it just right, given level trim, both
the block and prismatic coefficients came in at a perfect "1". Many kayaks
can't come up to even half of that.
I'm willing to bet that this is one of the few kayaks that is actually
faster with a pronounced stern heavy trim (much like Duane is paddling it in
the picture) then when it is at level trim.

Duane, do you need someone to do your marketing for you? Give me a try.

How about:
Square Deal Kayak and Houseboat Float Co. introduces their new "Number
One", a flat water sit-on-top anywhere kayak.
Finally, a timeless, classic shape in a sea kayak!
Who needs a self-righting kayak when our Number One paddles just as good
what ever side is up.
Amazingly dry ride! Yes, with Number One's freeboard you'll stay well out of
the water's reach.
Unmatched initial stability! No other kayak even comes close.
Fast! Fast! Fast! The winner of many local races.
Made from durable, lightweight, and long lasting materials!
Recyclable! When you are done with it simply return it to us and we will
recycle it for you.
Our advanced, perfectly uniform, material is used exclusively throughout
Number One's construction. No stress risers in this baby!
This tough material, adapted for kayak construction for the first time by
Square Deal can absorb tremendous abuse.
Your unsinkable Square Deal kayak will never loose its perfect shape no
matter how you store it!
You get both a wide and narrow kayak in one hull!
That's right, it just takes a simple 1/4 rotation (either way--you just
can't do it wrong) to make the switch from narrow and faster to wider and
more stable or back again. Some who practice can make the switch without
even stopping. No other kayak on the market today offers you this kind of
versatility in one kayak!
No other kayak today is more perfectly symmetrical.
No kayak is rated higher in those important design parameters, prismatic and
block coefficient.
Easy to ship! No "top load only" signs are necessary.
We made them stackable, so it is easy to store more than one.
At Square Deal our motto is: "we never cut corners".
This kayak is truly Number One!

Amazingly dry ride! Yes, with Number One's incredible freeboard you'll stay
well beyond the water's reach.

Unmatched initial stability! No other kayak even comes close.

The straightest waterlines in the kayak industry.

An unbeatable waterline to over-all length ratio. Square Deal Kayaks scores
another perfect "Number One" beating all others in this all important design
criteria. See http://www.qcckayaks.com/resources/howlong.asp to compare our
perfect 100% with the also-rans..

Fast! Fast! Fast! The winner of several local races (like the one pictured
on our website-see below). The truth is, theres just been no real
competition for it.

Number One is guaranteed to never leak as long as you own it, not even once!

You want to talk about safety? Number One is a truly unsinkable kayak! Yes,

Oh, now I get it. This has all been a big joke. I thought you _really_ were
launching a new kayak, given you usually carve your kayak seats from a big
block of foam. I figured you were starting with the foam first (form follows
foam) for the seat, though I have to admit I remember thinking when I saw
the size of the foam block, "My, those Californians are a wasteful bunch!"
:-)
