Sea Kayakers, Senate Bill S.786, proposes that the National Weather Service discontinue many services that people depend on in their daily lives. The idea is to not compete with commercial providers of weather forecasting. There is a question about whether this bill would end the NWS from providing weather forecasts over the internet. An article about it is at: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/content/news/epaper/2005/04/21/m1a_wx_0421.html This legislation was introduced by Sen. Rick Santorum, a republican from Pennsylvania. As a sea kayaker who depends on the NWS for safety and doesn't want to rely on getting his forecasts from some overly sun tanned guy on the local news, I know which party gets all of my votes. My understanding is that the NWS folks hold a daily briefing....which is attended by the meteorologists from the media outlets. The NWS folks tell them what is going on and they go back and create the graphics. OK, certainly some may tweak the info from the NWS based on their own work but I think the gist is that the NWS dispense the basic info. I too would hate to see the NWS out of this loop! I personally like the "Hourly Weather Graph" feature found on most NWS sites. Very helpful when planning on-water activities or other outdoor events. Arglbarglbofferustopabanmacvile ... or, words to that effect. Where do these bozo ideas come from? I'll be happy to heat up my reps and Senators, one being a Republican in good standing. Sea Kayakers, Re: Senate Bill S.786 Of course, any forecast you get from a corporation would be copyrighted, so if your only source of weather is corporations, you'd be in violation of copyright law if you copy and pasted the forecast onto your local kayak club email list to let others know what kind of conditions to expect for the paddle that weekend.
