Hi Folks,

I've discovered my rear bulkhead has quite a long stress crack which leaks
water into the day hatch compartment. Of course this is when I take on
water into the cockpit! :)

My boat's a glass Gulfstream built with original plastic bulkheads.

Repair? Anyone done it successfully? Best method?

Replace? Whom do I contact? Current Design best?

Thanks for the help!

Tom

Tom, until we know something about the plastic, it is a little tough to tell
which adhesive will work, although nine chances out of ten, if you roughen
the surfaces adjacent to the crack, out half an inch or so, with 80-grit
sandpaper, Aquaseal will take care of it. Do one side, wait a day, and then
do the other side. A wipe with rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth to clean the
surface half an hour before applying the Aquaseal is a good idea, too.

If it's the same as most Current Design's kayaks, it's ABS afaik.
Black plastic, either smooth or pebbled surface?

Or 3m 5200.

If you choose to replace it, CD can probably sell you a new bulkhead.
That will be more difficult than following Dave's instructions for a
repair. I once ripped out a CD Solstice forward bulkhead and you
have to cut away most of it and then rip the remaining out with brute
force. I could come up with no other way to get the sealant to let
go of the bulkhead flange.

If I were to replace the bulkhead, I'd skip the CD replacement and go
with a fiberglass or Kevlar one - sloped and wrapped around the rear
of the cockpit. Same difficulty in removing the old, but a cheaper
and nicer replacement.
