G'day, Andrew has passed the 3/4 mark and has 400km left to reach New Zealand. He's had a tough week. 30 foot waves, 40+knot winds and barnacles growing on the hull. But he's getting there and still on schedule. Vicki, his wife, continues the reports on http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html . G'Day, 120km left to go. ETA NZ Sunday. After 4 weeks sleeping or rolling in a kayak Andrew is still making 50 to 70km days. May not be any further communication til he arrives as his satellite phone charger has packed up following a capsize. http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html. A garbled distress message was picked up Friday evening (NZ time) from the area that Andrew McAuley was expected to be, but SAR were unsure that it was from him. Aircraft and surface vessels have been looking for him since. Tonight's news has reported that rescuers are heading to what is believed to be the up-turned hull of his kayak, 14 km from Milford Sound, his destination. It is over 24 hours since the distress call was heard. His family is at Milford Sound, where he was expected to arrive tomorrow morning. Here is hoping that he turns up safe. What was the weather like in the area when his distress message was picked up? He was so close to finish! Thanks Jackie, Dave and Paddlewise, The weather was stable moderate 2m swell, 10 sec period, 10knot winds. Andrew was about 70km west of his destination at Milford sound. The search resumed several hours ago. Andrew has a lot of experience to draw on. He has a large circle of friends and fellow kayakers thinking of him and Vicki and hoping he's found soon, Peter *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Photos taken by a colleague arrived at work (newspaper) last night showing Andrew's kayak in Doubtful Sound, after being recovered by a cruise ship. The boat was intact, except for missing the cockpit cover and rear hatch, and was in perfect condition, including a photograph of his son taped to the front of the cockpit. the kayak designer was quoted as saying the loss of the cockpit cover, which was integral to the safety of the craft, may have contributed to the tragedy. I have been speaking with Dave Winkworth, a friend of Andrew's in Australia, who is as mystified as everyone about the circumstances, saying that Andrew was extremely safety conscious, and would normally have had a 406 EPIRB, found in the kayak, in a harness around his neck. Dave is arriving to stay on Monday, so I will have a good chat then. There is a real feeling of gloom among paddlers here. Nigel Foster and Kirsten Nelson are here running some training, and the feelings are subdued. The search for Andrew should be resuming this morning. Also on kayaking, police today have criticised a kayak-fisherman who "forgot" to load his inflatable onto his vehicle, sparking a search when it was found floating in a bay off Kaikoura, east coast, South Island. The kayak was packed with fishing gear water, and some food. The police said that the paddler may be "embarrassed" by the efforts taken to find him, clearly hoping that he is. Apparently he was doing something that required taking EPIRB off for a second, and later didn't have a chance to grab it. Terrible... *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
