Well, it's a long shot, but I thought I'd try.
Back in probably the mid '60's, I read a book about a toy canoe or kayak
that was carved out of a piece of wood. My shady memory says a father and
son wrote their name on it and sent it down a river and the book described
its travels and travails.
Anyone heard of such a book? It stuck in my memory all these years and I
thought if I could find out the name it might make a nice Christmas gift for
a grandchild along with a carved kayak!

My guess is you're referring to "Paddle-to-the-sea" by Holling C.
Holling written in the 1940's. It is a book which I'm sure has special
meaning for many paddlers (myself included), in lighting the spark of
imagination for long distance paddling adventures.

It is still available from Amazon, etc. You should also check out the
movie version, done by famed Canadian paddler Bill Mason, and available
on DVD. A "must have" for any paddling video library.

Darn if you can't find everything on Google, even if you're not sure what
you're looking for!!!
At least I think I found it:
"Paddle to the Sea", by Holling C. Holling, from 1941, in case my
description made you want to read it!
This 'internet' thing is amazing!

Dear Mark,
That'd likely be "Paddle-to-the-Sea" which was made
into an equally compelling film. Its a great read
(and viewing). "Scuffy the Tug" is a similar story--
also very good. Shows you what I've been reading
lately.
