Good story - thanks. I started kayak fishing this year and hooked 4
salmon before I landed one. I don't know who got hooked tho. Me or
the fish! I'm still jazzed about it. I even rigged up my greenland
kayak for fishing.

I'm missing all the fun as well. Been home 13 days with the H1N1 Swine
flue. Did make it out for a drive last Wednesday to chase the storm along
the shore. That was no substitute for paddling. I posted some pictures to
the blog (VictoriaKayaker) that night by which time it was blowing about a
Force 10 Storm. I was think of Doug that entire evening.

Then tonight I saw his post and clicked on the link. To bad the state of
journalism is so bankrupt these days. Here we have a ferry that is alleged
to be less then adequate for the route it's on. Instead of validating the
question the CBC goes to a political hack and gives him a platform to mouth
off on.

Of course the Government and BC ferries will say all is well and of course
the NDP opposition will say all is not well. Who's served by that story.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear from a marine architect or someone in the
shipping industry who might be able to answer the questions about the
suitability of the ferry for Hecate Strait.

I lament the state of journalism these days.

Gordin,

Looks like I might be off the water for a while still. Yvonne's doctor said
her cancer looks inoperable (melanoma 14 years ago, now back). This might be
a hard storm for me and the kids to get through - not to mention for Yvonne
too.

I know you put up a good fight and won your battle. Life can be harsh. Enjoy
the days you have. On or off the water.

Doug,

My heart goes out to you and your family. I lost my first wife to cancer
when we were only 28. All I can say is live each day to the fullest
(something all of us should be doing as none of us know how long we'll be
around).

Yvonne, your children and you are in my prayers. Miracles do happen - I hope
we're due for another one.

Doug you give so much to others, and to life, that I am sure if you keep going
with your usual gusto that you and yours will get the most out of every day.
And if you can feel your way to share your trials and tribulations here, we will
do our best to lift away whatever small bits of your burden as might be possible.

Words are small comfort; but they helped some when I had similar need.

Sometimes life's just a bugger.

May you find the strength to endure the low points and find a few highs to
enjoy.

 Hi Doug,

Sorry for the belated reply - I've just started shovelling through a logjam in
my inbox.

My deepest sympathies. I lost my first wife to melanoma when we were both in
our twenties. (Hard to believe that was 22 years ago.)

Wish I had a magic wand to wave and make everything better, but I don't. All I
can say is talk lots and don't be afraid to confront your fears honestly with
each other. That way, if the outcome isn't good, there will be nothing left
unsaid. And if it is good, you'll be closer to one another than ever before.

Hoping for the best for both of you.

Philip

Phil,

It's all good. I mean, Yvonne, I, and the two girls don't have to like what
has happened, but we will deal with it with hopeful grace, a good attitude,
and pull together in love. Yvonne is keeping positive and trying to keep her
humour, stating at least in heaven she doesn't have to worry about family
finances.

Yvonne will be on Celebrex to see if she can shrink the tumor; if not, then
chemo in February, as there are no other options medically. We will fight it
but accept what we are not in control of and pray for strength when we
falter.

I figured last summer on the kayak trip Yvonne wasn't herself, but the bad
news confirmation is still something you can't prepare for. I'll get some
quiet kayaking in with the lightweight used Nordy and will have to wait for
the hard core game and a new boat for awhile yet, which is fine. I need to
be "here." I'm sure I've had my fair share of wild paddling - yes, I think
really I have. I may even try some more kayak solo sailing out on the
horizon with my Spirit Sail, imagining the experience might be a metaphor
for something, though I need to be at home as much as I can.

In the mean time, I bought some bike pogies from MEI for my sub-zero cycle
commuting (got to stay in shape). My kayaking ones didn't fit the
handlebars. How about a spray skirt for cycling that keeps away the spray
line off my back?

Hope this is okay being off-topic, but I think most of you know what Yvonne
has put up with, with me and paddling over the decades.

Best of the season Philip and all...

Doug Lloyd

Kayak fishing is certainly the hottest part of kayaking right now; getting
lots of publicity. I'm not sure I'd want to fight a 180-lb tuna from a kayak
but I would like to try smaller prey. A few of the BC paddlers go out and
fish in the kelp beds or on the reefs after they make camp to get something
for dinner and breakfast.

I did get some downriggers for the muthah-ship and we have a nice depth
sounder aboard.... and the 10hp Merc 4-stroke outboard will troll all day
long on 2 gallons of gas. Did I mention the heater? :)

Probably not where the most productive fishing is on the coast of BC,
near-shore, anyhow.

Should be noted many of the popular areas where paddlers gather are pretty
much fished-out for ground species (aka bottom fish), and some are in
recovery mode (e.g., Broken Group). And, pretty strict size limits on ling
cod and similar.

Prawn traps are a real bonanza some places, if you can handle the 300-400
feet of line needed to get down to them.

Red rock crab via traps are nice, in close. Dungies probably too deep for
easy yak fishing, except in more sheltered, deep sandy-bottomed inlets.

The last I heard, the Broken Group was closed to fishing within
an extensive envelop that includes the interior waters. Fishing outside
the envelop is allowed, but takes you outside the protection of the
islands, ie, you are plunking in open ocean. We were shown a picture
of the closure envelop at a fishing shop in Port Alberni.
