After reading Paddlewise for many years I have some questions and feel some of you on this great forum have dealt with this topic. I have been paddling 10k on a regular basis twice a week for the past 15 years. Sometimes more but usually not less. Most of my paddling has been in the old style Looksha III L 18-1/2 X W 22 . With added knee braces, I am in the boat fairly tight. I dont know if my paddling has anything to do with it but my left knee and hip started to feel uncomfortable in the boat and later on also while walking. It progressed to the point were a Hip-Replacement is now recommended. Does anyone think there could be an association with paddling and Hip problems? Does anyone paddle again after a hip replacement and what hip replacement did you have? I am looking at words like Zimmer MIS Mini-Incision . Anterior vs. Posterior incision. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Good morning Lloyd Dougie: Hope you and yours are doing well. Good luck and fair winds to those lion-hearted individuals who engage the fates and conduct extreme paddling expeditions. We are all pulling for Haley. She has more gumption than I do. My plans for the summer had included a circumnavigation of the earth by kayak, but after accessing my skills and desire, I have decided to settle for multiple re-runs of Globe Trekker instead. And as for Canada taking the gold medal in hockey...thanks a lot. And as for humour...that's not the correct spelling here in these parts. Good morning neibour. I'm sorry my spelling offends. It certainly offended my english teachers through my school years as I moved between Quebec, Pakistan and the United States, so it is sad that when I finally do spell correctly in the jurisdiction my bandwidth emanates from, to commonwealth norms, I'm still viewed as wrong. But replying to an American, I do admit the errour of my ways - see, error is so much easier to write; you're right Brad. I certainly hope I don't call on the incorrect saviour some day or follow the wrong contours on my map. Having lived in California for a few years on the San Andreas fault line in Contra Costa County and having felt a few tremours, err, tremors, I don't however understand why my mum, err, mom, shopped at the Contra Costa Centre. I think you better email them with you displeasure too. As for Haley, she is a fair maiden of the see indeed. Different from Freya for sure, but equally interesting, adventurous, and worthy of our support. As for kayaking around the earth Brad, I'm glad you did the math on that one. You have a great Spring when it arrives, Brad. I think it has already arrived here. And at least one American that skates got gold for the USA -- and Evan Lysacek didn't even fall through the melting ice. Doug Brad said: Good morning Lloyd Dougie: Hope you and yours are doing well. Hi I know people who have had hip and knee replacements and have no problems paddling. I believe hip recovery is easier and faster than knees. People who I have had the replacements indicate you must be dedicated in doing the rehabilitation. Finally, make sure the doctor and the hospital specialize in the replacements and do a lot of them. sid sid In a message dated 3/2/2010 3:46:13 P.M. John, Based on my experience; "keep paddlin !!" I had a complete left hip replacement in 1996, paddled Prince William Sound 10 months later in my CD Gulfstream and all around North America ever since - including British Columbia, Baja CA, Chesapeake Bay, Maine coast, Georgian Bay, Cape Breton Island, NS etc. Fourteen years later the hip is still working just fine. Today's procedures and hip technology are light years better than back in 1996. So this sample of one says go for it with high hopes for being out of commission for less than a year. Good luck. We will all be rooting for you. For what it's worth I was 68 when the procedure was done in '96. Sadly other factors have put the end (of active paddling) in sight. Your knee may be experiencing 'referred' pain from your damaged hip. I've had total hip replacements of both hips (1996 & 1999) and have no problems with kayaking, canoeing, biking, golfing, handball (friendly doubles) and normal activities. The other 2 prior replies were good. My paddling did not cause the problem, just osteoarthritis (I'm now 59 and too young for that! but life happens). I highly agree with the suggestion to find an ortho dr that does lots of these procedures. My dr does several hundred a year. I'd be a cripple right now if it weren't for the hip work. Don't hesitate to seriously consider it and good luck! Thank you Bruce and also thank you to Sid and Bill for your encouragement and insight. I am going for my second opinion today and thanks to your advice, I believe to have found a place most suited for this type of surgery in my area http://www.hipandpelvis.com/about/dr-yun.htm. Most important I have learned, it won't have to eliminate my paddling in the future and hope others can benefit from our collective experience. Bicycling has broken collarbones (the Tour de France typically has a few of these every year). American football has concussion and knee injuries. Kayaking is known for rotator cuff problems and shoulder dislocations (although fewer of the latter now that more people are taking lessons and learning how NOT to do a high brace). Bruce's remarks about "referred" pain reminded me of why I have arthritis in my right hip and right foot. I messed up my left knee in an industrial accident over 20 years ago and have walked with a cane or crutches ever since. At least any walk beyond the driveway of our house. It's no longer the left knee that gives me trouble when I try to walk further; it's my right hip and foot. The only two sports I can do now are kayaking and (oddly enough) cross-country skiing. Both of them are low (or no) impact on the legs. I was amazed to find that I could xc ski, actually, and only returned to it after a few winters of almost no exercise. Thinking it over I realized that all I did was shuffle my feet and I had two poles to lean on. In fact on at least one occasion my wife and I skied back to a plowed parking lot with our car a half-block away. We took our skis off and I discovered that I couldn't walk to the car. My wife had to bring it to me. But I could have skied there no problem!!! I gave up worrying about using a cane or crutches long ago. They make the difference between being able to go along on family outings or sitting in the car. But a recent 5-hour stint on (forearm) crutches at the Woodland Park Zoo went far beyond the ability of hydro-codone to fix and I'm afraid I was not my usual cheerful self during the 2-hour trip back home. I was, as near as I could tell, the only person on crutches there but there must have been 25 or 30 people in those electric wheelchairs you see advertised on tv and that got me to thinking. Those folks were all having more fun than I was. And I'd bet there were used ones on craigslist. So the next day I started looking at craigslist (using www.craigz.com which is a search engine for craigslist Pam pointed out to me and is very handy) for electric wheelchairs and found one for $300. Then I found an electric lift device that plugs into a Class III hitch receiver for $500. I am going to use a separate battery so I don't have to always take my own car (almost all of us have a hitch receiver in my family) and can just swap the lift and chair to another car and we can all go together. An unexpected bonus was that I'm now the most popular guy in the neighborhood with the kids because I let 'em drive. LOL My motto: I may be old, fat, bald and can't walk so good but it's STILL better than dead!!! My other motto: I'm not as dumb as I look. Oh... new that chair is on Amazon for US$3400 and the lift is on the 'Net for $1800. Craigslist is your friend. Never.... ever.... give up your mobility.
