Crescent Bay, here in Orange County is one of the nicest paddles in
SoCal. We had a nice group paddle out today, but I only got photos of ME
playing in the shore break. I have included a link to another CB paddle
to see some of the prettier sights the paddle has to offer.

You folks with your tropical locations!
I just have to add my tuppence worth.

I know it is not sea kayaking (I hang out here because of the quality of the
company--no joke) but Saturday I was out whitewater canoeing. A smaller group
had scouted the route a week earlier to find it open--to our great surprise.
But, here in Eastern Ontario we are seeing spring a month ahead of any year I
can remember and we may already be past the peak in some rivers.

One of several sets of photos can be found at
http://s229.photobucket.com/home/ylockhead/set/783?evt=user_media_share

While most of the kids (some younger than my bush hat) and some of the geezers
were in play boats, I was one of the holdouts who believe that a playboat can be
17 feet long and should be able to carry a couple of weeks' supplies.

There is a pic of us at
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6291822637&ref=mf#!/photo.php?pid=5611624&op=1&o=all&view=all&subj=6291822637&aid=-1&oid=6291822637&id=634620785

I don't know why my partner is not as gray as I am -- he had twice as many kids
and is almost a decade older!

Gary,
That looks like a whole lotta fun, but darn it must be a bit cold!
We must be a bit tropical-I wore a wetsuit yesterday, but only for
protection in case of rock contact. Could have paddled in a T-shirt it
was such a nice day.
You guys look like you're pretty hard core!

Hi Gary,

Nice photos but a little too chilly for my tastes. I'd be out cross-country
skiing.

We are seeing much the same thing here. In fact the lake would normally be
just now thawing out after a typical winter of being frozen solid since
November 15th. In contrast, the water temp is +45F right now.

No one I know is younger than my mountaineering boots!

Neat story... canoes are looking more fun all the time. There is a guy in BC
Canada who does salt water expeditions in a canoe and takes incredible
photos of the experience. And some waters fairly demand a canoe (I'm
thinking Boundary waters specifically). Nice to know that at least someone
can roll a canoe (nice video!).

I only saw a couple of shots of anybody playing, and not you two
geezers. That hole you were running looked like fun, although I might
wait until warmer weather. I was out Sunday, and while we didn't have
any snow, that water in N GA was brisk. I love it when I'm in a solo
canoe and play more than the youngsters in kayaks. <VBG>

I don't know if we are all that hard core--after all we did not have a chainsaw
or even an axe with us. It was supposed to be 10 C but instead we had a bit of
precip. "The good news is that it isn't rain!" I shouted. Later it was, but it
was all quite light until we were loading the cars and then it turned to serious
sleet--that was not nice at all.

The ledge we were crossing in the pic is the 1st or 2nd of a series called
"staircase" and the only trick is to ensure you haven't picked up a load of
water before you hit the 3rd (biggest) one.

It is an easy little warm up river, and we all surfed a bit at one place or
another. With the water at 0-1 C the playing was limited. I think there are
several of those playboaters who can roll (one went over 90-degrees
--unplanned-- and brought it back on one of the ledges). The guy in the video
did it just to do it--but it chilled the rest of us just to watch. Fortunately
that was 100 yards from the takeout.

I might go back to trying that kind of boating, but while my time is limited I
like to work on my tripping skills--hence the big boat.

I might take one of the Club's boats down there another time--just for the fun
of a tandem that will spin around with half the effort. I paddle with this
partner again he would prefer that, because he does whitewater on day trips and
longer trips generally on the flat, so my Yellow Submarine was a bit faster and
slower to turn than he was used to.

Here in southern Minnesota the temperatures have been 15 - 25 degrees above
normal, the snow is nearly gone, and the rivers are rising. I'll be staying
off the water, though, due to family health problems.

Speaking of health problems, I have a shoulder impingement with
calcification that probably stems from a poorly done canoe lift in the early
80s. Since a We-no-nah canoe was involved, I took the problem to the
daughter of the canoe's manufacturer. Dr. Cichanowski is a sports medicine
specialist with our health plan, and I figure she probably understands
paddling and paddling-related injuries better than most doctors.

These days We-no-nah also makes Current Designs kayaks.
