winter paddling is cold. serious cold. add water, and a little wind, and
wind chills become phenomonal. add a couple miles, or even a half mile
crossing to "home" and it can be misery. as richard's repost of the skier
article shows.

i've seen debates between wet suit and drysuit, with folks asking, which
is better. it isn't quite that simple.

example:
one man, in a swimsuit, put on a drysuit over it
second man, in a swimsuit, put on a wetsuit over it

they paddle out 1/2 mile, the water is 40oF [8oC?]
all other things equal, they lose thir boat. who stands the best chance of
survival??

answer in a later post, let's see some discussion now!!

OK. I'm at best a novice paddler, but used to sail
small sailboats in winter and am an active SCUBA
diver (though not much cold water activity). I'll
assume that "survival" means doing the 1/2 mile
(1 km) swim back to shore.

Just saying "wetsuit" and "drysuit" doesn't provide
enough information. There's a tremendous insulation
(and flotation) difference between 2mm and 7mm
wetsuits; there are corresponding differences between
shell, neoprene, and compressed neoprene drysuits.
However the neoprene drysuits are generally only used
by divers, so I'll assume a shell type drysuit.
Further, I'll stipulate a 5mm wetsuit. That's thin
enough that you can still have reasonable motion
(divers generally move slowly underwater and commonly
use up to 7mm suits), but thick enough to provide
reasonable insulation in the case of immersion.

You've stipulated the subject has no insulating layer
other than their outer layer. While that's normal for
a wetsuit, it isn't for a drysuit. In the absence of
that layer, the shell drysuit isn't going to provide
much thermal protection in the case of immersion. As
stated, the wetsuit swimmer is probably better off.

Now, if our drysuit paddler is wearing some fleece
underwear, or if the wetsuit is a 2mm splash suit
with lycra side panels, this conclusion could change.

Either wet- or dry- suits, selected and worn
appropriately, could provide survival in this
situation.

If I *knew* I would be taking a half mile swim in 40F
water, I'd select a drysuit with appropriate
underwear. That combination could keep me comfortable
for hours. On the other hand, I've worn 1/4" (6mm)
wetsuits in water well under 40F (winter ocean dives
off Massachusetts) and been safe and reasonably
comfortable for an hour or two in the water. Oh yes,
we'd swim a lot further than a 1/2 mile in that time,
but with fins.

In the winter we some times have to put on long sleeve shirts,
most of the time just wearing a shirt is enough.

I think kayakers lead wonderfully fulfilling lives. In fact, just last
week a good friend of mine tried to convince me that one of the best thing
about kayaking is the amount of time that we all spend naked together. She
was wearing clothes at the time, but I have to admit of being convinced
anyway. Although maybe a little too easily...

GOOD POINT FROM HER! Last summer was great fun, we spent lots of time
with my girlfriend in a beutiful island (about 1 km long, 200 metres wide)
skinny dipping and playing Adam & Eve daily. Fortunately, not very many
fishers around.. ;-)

A drysuit will keep you dry, not warm. You must have some sort of thermal
undergarment to provide the warmth. So the answer to your *tricky* question is
(drumrrrroll): The wetsuit. However, if you allow the drysuit wearer to use it
the way it is intended, with a proper undergarment, the answer is different.

i've seen debates between wet suit and drysuit, with folks asking, which

===================
i have been diving in a farmer john bottom and vest wet suit in 43 deg
water and my experience was that very shortly my left arm quit functioning
(no problem), then my left leg quit working... i decided to returned to
the boat while i still had something functioning.

i have felt the coldness of 40 degree water against unprotected skin in a
drysuit.

thanks for asking, but neither of those choices is for me.

I was in Florida once, several years ago. I left on Christmas Day, with
everything covered in ice, some snow on the palm trees, and radio reports of
_many_ road closures. It was warmer farther north.

Florida is a bing state and quite frankly, and area that gets snow is
 florida, as opposed to Florida.

In my opinion, nothing north of Jupiter is Florida or if you can't
see the Gulf Stream from the beach....

Reminds me of one of my favorite Canadian skinny dipping stories (my doctor
swears it is true but then he is a doctor).

He was working in emergency in Wawa, Ontario when a patient was brought in
who had been skinny dipping. His manhood had been assaulted by a Pike with
devastating results. My doctor no longer skinny dips (something he used to
do a lot of). Neither do I. Do all my Adam and Eve stuff on shore now.

WELL! We did find jaws of a pike from the shore.. the backbone (or what
ever you call it there) was as thick as my thumb (not one of the
smalles..) and the JAWS were about four inches wide. Tooth were something
to look at - that did make us a little less willing to go naked to the
sea...

A true story, cheers,

I remember a story on the radi about the annual city Mayor's convention
several years back (15-20 years?), held during the winter, was in Miami
that year. Terrible weather, freezing temps and blustery winds. Just for
the heck of it the Mayor of Anchorage called home, got the weather and told
everyone, "Hey -- 50 degrees and sunny in Anchorage if we want to move this
thing up there!"

Personally, I'm looking for the place with the weather conditions that both
Florida and California claim (but neither has). I stole that line, anyone
know who from?

Gives a different connotation to the word "codpiece".

All states have laws to protect the rich from the poor.
Few attempt the more difficult task of protecting the
poor from the rich.

Do you think that is why they wore them - thy all went skinny dipping and
needed protection. On the other hand, maybe they couldn't swim very well.
Since cod are bottom feeders they would need a codpiece instead of a
pikepiece.

Nice signature line, Chris. From what I've been seeing on the news, it
should read:

No melanoma problems here at this time of year. The rivers have good water
in them, though -- the reason I moved here (and I ain't tellin' any more!).
Florida wasn't even on my list of states to consider as new places to live

Well there's not much white water here in S. Florida...not even much
surf at the beach...

I've lived on 3 continents and dozens of different cities, and no
place is perfect. If the wether is good, then it's too crowded or
expensive... if it's not crowded, it gets boring... So far FL seems
to have the best of most worlds...lots of warm water for diving and
paddling, no shortage of entertainment and music and reasonable
housing and bearable traffic...

Now that I live her in Oregon (from Chicago), I feel the same way about
this place. It rains a lot here yuh know. And it's cold, and the indians
shoot arrows at you, and I have to send this e-mail by pony express to
Denver before it hits the internet....<grin>

Out here in North Plains, OR, we gotta put fertilizer around the phone
poles or our modems slow down to 600 bps. Sure glad the weather returned
to normal (rain). I was feeling a lot of guilt anxiety after TWO sunny
days IN A ROW.

Roger, you are from Oregon and might know this, but others won't. You know
they have a special term here for when it rains two days in a row?

Call it a "weekend"

There is a bit of truth in the saying, "Oregonians don't tan, they rust."

Hank

By the way, you're not supposed to tell them there's internet access here!
