hey there,

after a year of playing in the new sport of kayaking, i loaded my solo canoe
on the truck tonight - for it's first outing since last spring. sure, i'll
work tomorrow but only for half a day. then it's sunshine, lazy time and
lunch at a favorite get landing... fall is almost in the air in these parts.

anyone else paddlin a canoe anymore?

bye bye bliven

Sure, lots of us. I'm just about to sell my Cascade C-1 and switch
to a slalom C-1 -- which should be a real education in edge control for me.
Hopefully I won't need to roll *too* much, because it's been a while
since I've practiced the C-1 roll.

And not to brag too much, but my C-2 mixed partner and I are having
a great racing season: we've even beaten all the men's teams each of
the last two weekends. The Whup-a-Tar we're paddling is lightning-quick,
even if we aren't, and each time we race we're doing less and less
talking and more and more hard paddling -- our second run at every race
has been faster than our first 4 out of 4 times.

We haven't tried OC-2 yet, but we're thinking about it. Since
both of us are decked boaters, we'll probably be quite the comedy
act until we get used to the height of the boat. ;-)

Just about every other day even if only for an hour or so.

I generally pull mine out in the winter since I switch from big water to
little water. Also, for the winter camping trips, my dog comes with me and
she just won't jam into the kayak hatch or straddle the back deck :-) On
these trips, I paddle the canoe (with her in it) and tow the kayak out to
some island. During the days, I leave her on the island (to do dog stuff),
and I can paddle the kayak. Works out well for both of us. We just got
back from the Adirondacks and leave in a couple of days for Squam Lake in
NH. The only bad thing about using the canoe in the winter, it's really
cold being fully exposed (even with thick fleece under a drysuit).

Oh yeah.

At least every other weekend I get out for a workout in either a USCA
marathon flatwater canoe or a wenonah sundowner. The sundowner is a nice
boat for fair weather east coast ocean paddling.

I also got a few days in exploring the marshes on Cape cod, cruisin'
around with a canoe pole, letting our 2 year old wander around the
canoe as we went.

I got less freestyle canoeing in than I would like, but I have to borrow
a boat to do that. A 17' old town tripper just doesn't cut it for
traditional solo or freestyle.

Probably my best paddle day of the year was exploring the Crystal River, in
florida, Omering along in a borrowed canoe with an abused paddle.

I have a Dagger Reflection 16. I take it on fishing trips with friends and
also take my wife paddling when we can find time. My daughter and her
husband used it the last time it was out.

I enjoy the canoe for tandem use.

I've got a couple of 4 day weekends coming up in early October. I was going
to go hiking up into the NH White Mountains for the fall foliage. Haven't
gotten the (real) old legs in good enough shape to tackle any mountains so
will probably take the little 11 canoe north to some of the lakes in eastern
NH / western ME and camp on shore.

Yeah, I have as many mis-adventures in the canoes as I do in the sea kayak.

I'd like to be. I gave away my canoe when I moved west and took up
kayaking. Now I'm back north and am in the market for a cheap but good
canoe. I picked up an old wood canvas Kennebec that I was hoping could be
fixed, but it's beyond help and will probably be burned to provide heat to
boil my skinboats cockpit coaming. ;-)

I found a used Old Town Columbia for $400, but I havent found anyone who
can tell me if its worth the money. Probably not a great solo canoe but I
thought it was light for a glass boat and would be good for fishing with
the Newfy and for trips in the BWCA and beyond. Its a pretty boat. Anyone
know about these? The guy told me they dont make them anymore, and I
couldnt find any info about them on Old Towns website

Maybe I could pick up a good new Canadian canoe too. The exchange rate is
very favorable (to me).
