aren't worth keeping, but there's also a lot of good info that seems
like a shame to lose (well, maybe it's just a problem with my brain, but
I can't keep track of all of the good stuff). Any thoughts? (or just
not worth thinking about<g>)

Dave, I second this idea. Some previously discussed questions do keep
resurfacing, especially as new people join Paddlewise. Archives of threads
might be especially helpful if they could be set up on the webpage.
For some time now I have saved some of the thread messages to folders on
my e-mail desktop (examples--Navigation, Paddling Safety, Gear, Boats,
etc.). I could drop those back into an archiving system, and probably some
other folks could do likewise.
Does anyone have a good approach to setting this up without putting a
maintenance burden on someone?

I know that Jackie (our wonderful listmom) had been doing something
similar to this with some thread topics (see
http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/) but she stopped at some point
in time. I can see how the process could be difficult - do you archive
by general topic (as John indicates that he does) or by actual thread
topic. How does one decide which comments merit archiving and which are
little more than drivel? (I'm an expert driveller myself<g>) And if
nothing else, I'm sure that the process could chew up a considerable
amount of time (although I think in these winter months some of us have
entirely too much time on our hands and not enough on the water).
One of the great things so far about Paddlewise is its very loose,
informal and friendly atmosphere and structure - maybe doing something
like this would be detrimental to the very environment that the
Paddlewisenheimers have created. Don't know the answer - hope I haven't
opened Pandora's box.

Dave (remembering the two old lessons - "Never Volunteer" & "Don't ask
questions for which you do not have the answer")<vbg>

We keep getting the same questions with the same answers that ignite the same
arguments. I.E. Paddlefloats. My fingers gets sore hitting the delete button
but I know if I read any SOT / paddlefloat massage I will get pulled into the
loop and have to fire off a smart A__ reply.

Too bad we can't hook into http://www.dejanews.com/ somehow.

Also, too bad we can't identify the really good threads in advance so we
could start archiving at the beginning. ;-)

Deja news allows you to create a custom news group, active only on Deja news. IIRC, you can also password protect this news group. Subscribing to paddlewise would then get you the password. From there you go to deja news and read threads in the paddlewise news group at your leisure. I'm not sure if you would be able to conduct regular deja news searchs on this custom group though, but I bet you can.

The upside: Automatic archives that are searchable. Your email account won't be flooded if you take a week long trip paddling into the sunset and hunting for CBRs. You don't have to unsubscribe if you become a heretic and stop paddling, just stop going to the news group. If you get a deja news email account you get an email account safeguarded against spam (it ain't perfect but they weed out most of it).

The downside: Deja news can occasionaly be out of service and/or slow. Putting up with banner ads at the tops of all of the pages. Web access required (some people only have email). Not sure if it can be regulated by Mistress Jackie (need to check that).

It would sort of be a custom rec.boats.paddle. Not saying I'm absolutely for this. It's just a thought. Avoiding repetitive threads has it's upsides and downsides. Maybe someone new is on the list with different insite than was posted before. Or maybe someone strongly on one side has reversed their position (like that will ever happen :) ).

Point in case: A long time ago it was decided that a down sleeping bag was OK since with a little care you could keep it dry. When that thread came up again the majority voted against down this time. If someone just did a search insteading of spawning the latest thread they would have had an entirely different consensus than what came out when done again.

Well, I've rambled long enough. Time to go paddle down part of the Arkansas river. :)

Mel

Now I really feel as though I did open Pandora's box with my initial
question! I certainly don't want to change the structure or function of
Paddlewise. I think that Paddlewise works well and very effectively
accomplishes the goals that prompted its creation. I strongly believe in
the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I tried sending Jackie an email asking her for her opinion on the
subject(archiving articles), because she had started doing something
similar to this on the Paddlewise web page but the address listed there
for her bounced - anybody know where we can find her?
