Follow PaddleWisers... Long time lurker... love and learn much from this list. I am in the exploration phase of a project and need your help... As I'm sure we will all agree, water issues (quality, access, conservation and safety...) are near and dear to all our hearts... after all the kayaker gets 'closer' to the water than any other boater! Soooooo an idea was born recently and it has been proposed that a "Kayak Be-In" be held in the San Francisco Bay (some have suggested doing it on Jan.1, 2000!) to call public and media attention to vital H2O issues. Areas of concern include; General Water Quality both Fresh and Salt Open Coastal Access and clean up General Conservation and reduction of fresh water usage Boating and water safety Promotion of Kayaking and human powered water craft The 2 or 3-day event could also have a corresponding expo with exhibits as well as perhaps some seminars, speeches and of course music! Can you imagine 10,000 kayakers and canoes in the bay! Thoughts, Comments, Suggestions?? Is this a crazy idea or what? Is it me or is the water dirtier, the coast and shore less clear and more water related 'incidence' than ever before? Maybe if we could turn our young people on the to the "high" of Kayaking in open water.... Additionally with recent government cut backs water and conservation issues have been placed on the back burner. Some feel it is important to let our elected officials know in an election year that we think water issues should be near the top of the public agenda. BTW I could plan on putting up a web site shortly. It's _all_ our water... there's only so much of it... and as the ad goes "hydrate or die"... think I'll have another drink while I can! Please let me know your thoughts, I look forward to hearing from you. Together we can... Tom, It sounds like a great idea. I will be paddling in Baja on 1/1/2000 (Y2K escape expedition), but please contact me if you need some help. You might want to contact Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition about participating in this event. They are a grassroots organization that works on toxic exposure issues in the south bay. They have some interesting maps of pollution sites at their web site (http://www.svtc.org). They have a couple kayakers who work there (including my partner). I'll pass this information on to them. Some other organizations might be interested in this as well - I suggest contacting the ACA and Friends of the River. I think it's a great idea, except for the date. I'm not sure what kind of positive influence thousands of hung-over kayakers would have. We'd probably end up doing a little over-the-side polluting ourselves. Anyway, you'd probably have a better turn-out if it was during the summer. Another good group to contact is San Francisco BayKeeper (http://www.baykeeper.org/). They have used kayaks on several occasions to monitor and report water pollution incidents in the Bay. Tom, I'm in. I think it's a great idea. I suspect I can round up most everyone from the Santa Barbara Kayak Association (www.sbka.org) to make the pilgrimage to SF or ?? to make the strong statement against polluted water. Let me know how we can help you. I live outside of Reno, and I'll sure try to make it. Most important thing is to not just call attention to the situation, but also present solutions.....sounds like you're on the right track. I also think that 1/1/2000 would not be a good choice of dates. Imagine what the media will be covering on 1/1/2000. The summer of 2000 would be a better choice for many reasons. As can be seen at: http://www.sbcphd.org/ehs/oceanmn.htm we in the Santa Barbara area have many water quality problems that demand attention. Even beautiful and remote Santa Rosa Island has problems with its creeks. A look at the Surfrider website: http://www.surfrider.org/wqjump.htm shows that there are dozens of currently active water quality alerts along the california coast. Count me in. Let me know if I can be of any help.
