To the corporate memory of PaddleWise --- I have a small drybag,
7" by 24", with the standard roll down drybag non-seal. Can't
remember where I got if, and have gone through all the catalogs I
can find to buy a few more. Anybody ever see really small
diameter drybags --- about four inch diameter --- around for sale?
(They're the only drybags that will go through my four inch deck
plate "hatches".)

Jack, if you can't find what you are looking for, you can make your own. Seattle Fabrics sells heat-sealable coated nylon fabric that can be made into custom dry bags. They also sell poypropylene webbing and buckles for the tops. I've used their materials to make custom bags for sleeping bags, stoves, tents, boat ends, and the spaces alongside a skeg box. If you decide to roll your own, let me know, and I'll send you an illustrated article on how to do it.

This sounds like an article of wide interest. Can it be put on a web
site? Anyway, I'd like a copy.

Is there some way I can get this article, too?

For those interested in making their own dry bags the basic plans are available
in reprints of an early Sea Kayaker article directly from Seattle Fabrics.
They have proven to be exceptionally helpful in the past, supplying fabric,
webbing, buckles, appropriate thread and the basic plans -- all by mail and all
at a fair price. Hint: ask if they have any discounted material, odd ends of
rolls and cosmetically flawed items. In the store these are much cheaper even
than the standard fabric.

I make bags for everything -- tent poles, tapered tent bags for bow or stern,
VHF radios, and the rest. Also color coding is easy and handy for organizing.

Happy sewing.

Rich, I called Seattle Fabrics on this before going to Baja. They
offered me their catalog (at a price... $5 I think!) but would not give
me any information on a pattern for dry bags, just made vague reference
to it being an article. The pattern is not sold or mentioned in their
catalog. I can't order material without knowing how much is required...
so I need a pattern first, but wasn't able to get them to give me a
pattern... and round and round we go. Can't someone just scan the sucker
and send it to me??

That article is in the Spring '90 issue of Sea Kayaker, and my
current SK issue indicates that it's available as a back issue. Just
looked at it --- sometimes it's nice to be a packrat --- and it's a
perfect answer to the original post in this thread --- mine. Looks
pretty simple to make, and the "pattern" is just about "pilot-proof"!

Thanks, y'all.
