Here is a question for all you paddlers out there with more than one boat.
When did you get the itch for the 2nd boat? I've only had my first for a
month and I'm already starting to think about adding another to my
collection. Not because I'm unhappy, just because I thing I might want a
variety...

Suzie,

I am constantly fine tuning my fleet. Here is a quick run down.

I started with a plastic Sea Lion. I loved it (and still do). A few months
after that, I decided I needed to learn white water kayaking. So I bought a
used Perception Dancer XT. 8 months after that, I decided I needed a faster
boat. So I bought a Seda Glider (a really fast, Kevlar boat). 9 months
later, I decided I needed a portable boat I could travel with. So I bought
a Feathercraft Khatsalano. About 9 months after that, I decided to upgrade
my white water boat, so I bought a Dagger Redline.

That was maybe 10 months ago. I now am about to buy an ocean play boat
(probably a Kevlar Looksha Sport), a creek boat (i.e. a high volume white
water boat for big water), and a cheap plastic double kayak (for the kids)
In about 9 months, I plan to buy a new racing boat (probably a Speedster ---
though the Phantom sure looks good). In about 18 months, I will probably
buy a Falcon 16 for my wife and 6 months after that, I'll probably sell my
Glider and replace it with a Falcon 18.

Oh yeah, and I need to buy a new house with a oversized three car garage to
hold all my boats.

The first "itch" is when your friends start saying they would love to go
paddling with you; the second is when you realize that is safer to paddle
with someone else -- it also makes loading and unloading soooo much easier.

Subsequent itches are for when you decide you want a smaller boat for rivers,
or a larger boat for touring/camping. Any justification is perfectly
acceptable!

Then there couples who own two singles and a double.

I find outfitters are a great source for really cheap boats when they sell
off the old rentals to replace their fleets.

Congratulations, Tim. I didn't have the courage to say how many boats I have
in my fleet, but a friend just gave me a cute sign: it's a 6-inch paddle that
says "Boat Rental." However, the neighborhood kids love me!

My next purchase will be Feathercraft's K-Light.

The "itch" affects almost everyone who paddles eventually. Tim down in
Oregon appears to have an advanced case of the itch.<g> I suspect he has a
_very_ tolerant wife :-) The symptoms of this disease can sometimes be more
severe in regions which offer easy access to both whitewater and flatwater
(and open ocean which is usually anything BUT flat).

So far I'm fairly stable with 2 sea kayaks, a WW canoe and a skiff, but am
currently being tempted and tormented by a NautiRaid Raid2 folder and a Bell
touring canoe.
I admit to having an even more advanced case of this same disease regarding
tools. I'm down to only 1 trip per month to the local hardware store.

i only have kayak (a plastic skerray) at the moment but that is an historical aberration. I;m currently beginning to scrape together $ for a bigger glass trip boat, possibly a new one here designed and built by NSW south coast resident, senior instructor and perfectionist kayak builder, David Winkworth - The Nadgee Explorer (Nadgee is our favourite bit of wilderness coast in southern NSW). A lovely well thought out boat, designed and built by a very good sea kayaker as he wanted a boat. He has paddled a prototype for at least the last two years and has recently built the first complete one. relatively, but not excessively, costly but guaranteed to be well built and fitted out.

many of you may have seen this but in case you haven't -here it is
you can insert bikes, tools whatever
I believe it started with bikes

All those kayaks - for those who partners don't understand that different conditions require different kayaks and that time spent in the shed with your kayak(s) is in fact quality time.

Oh Suzie, what a nasty question.... happens just as you leave the shop with
your first boat and your eye catches something you missed on all those other
trips down there. Damn, what's that you ask, lowering your boat? Got one in
the water I can try? Just the thing for the wife...she'll love it...what? my
cards maxed out?... OK, but I'll be back.... or something like that!

I like this thread. It makes me feel less bonkers.
I love my boat and wouldn't hurt her feelings for anything. But I
discovered need to get a friend for her. I found out she needed a friend when
I discovered how far I really wanted to paddle. This developed within the
first 2 months of paddling her.
My 13'6" Breeze is a great boat and gets into the little places where
we can see the birds. The main problem is that I'm really enjoying long
distances and want to do more of that without devoting my whole life to
getting places. Therefore I need to find the Breeze a friend who is a bit
quicker.
The other issue came up as soon as we looked at the recreational
kayak my SO has and realized that boat wasn't going to make it in the
conditions I wanted to paddle in. So it is either another boat or limited SO
paddling.

A couple of weeks after I bought my first kayak, an Aquaterra Caspia.
I thought I would use the first one for paddling around on the
local lake and for fishing. Then I took a three day sea kayaking
course and got a chance to paddle several different touring boats
including a couple of fiberglass boats (a Wilderness Systems Sealution
and a P&H Iona). After that I knew I wanted a "real" sea kayak.
A couple of weeks later I found a used fiberglass VCP Skerray. I've
been paddling it ever since and have been quite happy with it.

Last summer my girlfriend and I were driving back through the
Adirondacks after a long weekend at a resort. Both of us needed
to use a restroom so as we came into Inlet, NY. I mentioned that
I thought there was a paddling shop in Inlet and perhaps we could
stop there to use a restroom. We stopped at the place and looked
around in the yard at some of their canoes and kayaks for a bit
and found a used Indian River canoe for a real good price. We
asked the sales person about it and he said that we could test paddle
it and two other boats for $15 or so (which would be deducted from
the price if we bought one). We weren't in any hurry to get home
so we gave it a try. Besides, they didn't have a public restroom
but there was an outhouse on the trail to their put-in that we
could use. After an hour or so of test paddling the three canoes
we went back to the shop and left a bit later with a brand new
Wenonah Adirondack on our car.

Over the winter I bought a used Eskimo Diablo. I haven't had a
chance to paddle it much because the water levels have been so
low here and I predominately paddle my Skerray (about three times
a week).

I love the research and shopping process.

My first boat was a Feathercraft double. Did some nice trips but it was
slow, I didn't take care of it and the struts froze together. Sold.

Next an Eddyline WindDancer. Too big and hard to manage in high wind.
Sold.

Next a Necky Tesla. Also big but kept it for about 8 years. Very good for
fishing. Don't fish anymore so sold it.

Mariner Coaster. Great fun but not ideal for touring and I don't surf much.

Seda Glider. Supposedly very fast but you have to be stronger than me to
take advantage of its speed. Also very difficult to turn into high wind,
especially unloaded. Sold.

Mariner Express. Almost as maneuverable as the Coaster but much better for
touring. Still have it and will never sell it.

Current Designs Solstice GTS. Very comfortable and stable for a 22" beam
boat. Best boat for going straight ahead. Not very maneuverable but OK.
Still have it.

Currently on list of next boats: Mariner II or Mariner XL (not MAX).
Romany Explorer if it ever comes out in Kevlar. Also looking for a ruddered
boat that handles as well as the above when the rudder is up.

Jerry

Susie ....
Ahh, yes, I remember the day well. Newspaper headlines read "One-boat
Man Goes Over Edge", or something like that. Actually, I would have been
happy forever if the old "aluminum Grumann" had cooperated. Grandpa had
a fibreglas pirogue, but the canoe WAS MINE !! Epoxy and heli-arc kept
it going way beyond what a sane paddler would have used. But, hey, it
finally got rigged out for sailing (with home-made lateen rigging,
leeboards, and tiller rudder ); had an outrigger setup; had a small
outboard motor mount; was indestructible ...well, almost. It was a
Louisiana canoe that finally gave up the good fight against an Arkansas
river. Newspaper headlines read "Man Lives, Boat Doesn't". ( I still
get sad thinking about that final sight ! )
Well, I knew about rivets and epoxy and fibreglas and .....Hey, what's
this ? Plastic ? Tupperware ? ....WOW !!
Now to answer the question ....The itch has ALWAYS been there.
My pile went from a quickly gotten OT 169 to a more organized approach
toward Arkansas rivers via 2 ww yaks, and finally to a Sea Lion for
tour-camping . I still have Grandpa's pirogue and it still carries its
share of the itch ! I love my current pile of boats, but I don't think I
have as much fun with ALL of them as I did with that grey-ghost canoe
there in the foggy, mist of my memory ....
Anybody got any good URL's for used boat lists ?? .......adieu
........Peyton (Louisiana)

I got the itch about 2 months after completing my first boat. I built
it, and building it was almost as fun as paddling. Ideally, I would
always have a boat in-progress, so that I can spend time both building
and paddling completed boats.

I really started getting the itch about 2 months ago (1 year later)
after I decided my 24" wide Chesapeake is not as efficient or fun to
roll as a narrower boat would be.
