I've got a couple sprayskirts of the neoprene deck/coated nylon tunnel variety
which have lost waterproofness on the tunnel. The loss of coating seems to be
worst where they were flexed (or abraded) the most. So, I bought a can of
Recoat (a Kenyon product, I think), which is a water-based emulsion of the
polyurethane stuff which composed the original waterproof coating. It is
recommended for renewing the waterproof coating on nylon.

Per the instructions, I washed the nylon in warm soapy water, rinsed
thoroughly, allowed it to dry, and then brushed the Recoat on. After the
requisite several days, used the sprayskirts on an overnight tour. Disaster!
The re-coating is coming off in strips, particularly where it contacted
itself.

What gives? Does anybody have a technique/material which will lay down a
durable waterproof coating on nylon?

I am loath to abandon these sprayskirts. Other than the loss of
waterproofness on the tunnel, they are in very good shape.

P.S. These are from Snapdragon, a reputable and popular brand out here.

<snip part about nylon re-coating mishap>

You could go to the local scuba shop and buy some neoprene of the same
thickness as your sprayskirt deck. Cut off the nylon and make a tube
with the neoprene--cut the seam out of the old nylon tunnel and use it
for a pattern. Use Aquaseal and you shouldn't have to sew anything.

Or, you could send them to me, with the knowledge that they'll be used,
loved, and not at all abandoned! :)

Dave: I had the same problem with my Snapdragon sprayskirt. It was just under a year old. I sent it back and they replaced it with a new one. Have yours exceeded the 1-yr warrenty? Have you asked Snapdraggon if they can repair it? Ken Johnsokn

Dave,

It is possible that you didn't allow sufficient time for the coating to
cure totally. When I covered the bottom of folding kayak with hypalon
paint, it took months to cure properly. In the meantime, I would recommend
you routinely put baby powder on the newly coated services. This will
prevent different portions of the skirt from adhering to each other.

Hi Dave,
I hate to be the bearer of un-a-peeling news, but the formula for Recoat was
changed a few years back (I think it was to make it meet newer
safety/environmental standards). The new stuff is so ineffective, my
employer (an outdoor retailer) decided we were actually not doing any
service to our customers who were hoping to restore their rainwear, tent
flys, etc., so we no longer carry it. If you find a product that works
please let me know - we'd love to help our customers get more mileage out of
delaminated stuff rather than having it go to premature graves in a
landfill.

Thanks, Philip. The ineffectiveness has not stopped REI or Campmor from
carrying it. I think I'll send the spare can (unopened) back. This stuff
sucks ... errr ... peels.
