I have a friend (living in N. New York State) who is looking to purchase
a new kayak. He is looking for something light and fast, but still
reasonably stable. He likes to race, but he will be paddling mainly on
the St. Lawrence R. where he will usually be on flat water and
occasionally dealing with 1-2 ft. choppy waves. His budget makes
something under $2000 preferable. He is about 5'8" and about 230 pounds.
I know this is sort of looking for the mythical universal boat, but does
anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

The Seda Glider might be just the boat. Its not perfect, but its fast
enough for racing and big enough for serious touring. I am built similarly
to your friend (I'm 5'8" 220 pounds) and I find the Glider to be very
comfortable.

Its also relatively cheap. I think you can get a Kevlar version of the
Glider for under $2000. Tell him to get it with the rudder option. I hate
rudders, but there are times you really need the rudder on the Glider.

The Seda Glider would give him the most bang for the buck and would race
well. If he wishes he could forego getting it in Kevlar which jacks up
the price some. At his build, he would have no problem with dealing
with the heavier fiberglass version.

I have Seda's Gypsy in the Deluxe fiberglass and it only weighs 42 lbs. (15'
long); however, the standard 'glass boat weighed several pounds more (don't
have catalog handy).
