Jackie or others who paddle with dogs,

How did you teach your dogs to ride on your kayak?

And a corollary question from a guy who's been hanging around the Humane
Society a lot lately - how BIG are the dogs people paddle with in a kayak?
I figure I could paddle a canoe with a Newfoundland in it, but a kayak....
Another question is what type of kayak do you use with your dog?

Good question Dana!!!

I would be curious if the dog is feathered or unfeathered?
Also, is it the dogs decision to be feathered or unfeathered or is the
owner/ trainer forcing the issue?
Sorry, I just had to write this. ;-)

Arthur,

My dog is feathered, my wife's dog is unfeathered. Since feathered dogs
stay wet longer than unfeathered dogs, I would prefer to teach her to ride
on the rear deck. I don't know if there are ACA/BCU rules about feathered
vs. unfeathered dogs, nor do I know if doggy spoonsoons <g> are required or
recommended. I suppose I will also need to determine how to arm the dog, or
will sharp canines suffice? Now that I think of it one dog has a tail and
the other has a stump, have I started a doggy modification to the rudder
debate?

Providing a rumble seat helps keep them on board. For info, see
http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/poochyak.html (there's a link to several
photos submitted by other paddlers with paddling pooches).

Some folks open the hatch, but I'd rather leave it closed. However,
something like a seasock in the hatch should work, I would think.

Both Mollie and Hallie have jumped off. They find out rather quickly
they prefer to be *in* the kayak :-) The type of doggie pfd I use has
a grab loop on the back. After a couple of trips, they get used to it
and Mollie usually lies down and goes to sleep.

More info on paddline with Mollie at http://www.sea-kayak.org/poochyak.html

Cheers,

Jackie

Raising a bunch of Lab's and running filed trials with them I had to learn
real quick on how to get them in the boat. For those of you with large
dogs, such as Labs, they need a foot hold and then you can place your hand
on the back of their neck. Push forcefully and you will help them up and
over. They learn quick and this is the least problematic allowing the dog
to do the muscle work. It doesn't require that you "horse" them over the
side as they use their front legs and are able to balance themselves back
into the boat.

When I was paddling along in Lac La Juene near Kamloops B.C., I came across a
man who paddles with his dog. The dog was of a smaller type.
But the dog sat on the back of the kayak as he paddled. The back had a piece of
carpet attached to the back of the kayak for grip.

When my son was about 12, we used to paddle, him in his Dancer, me in my
XL-14 (big WW canoe), and Chloe, our golden retriever. She was supposed
to stay with me, but she would spot her boy out in the water and go to
him. Somewhere we have a photo of a happy dog on a sprayskirt with 2 not
quite long enough arms holding a paddle in front of her.

Not recommended for making distance, but fun.

Also, a friend of mine taught his dog to stay in the boat by letting him
swim. After a while the dog gets tired and wants very much to sit in the
boat.

Cats, now....

If your dogs are neutered or spayed, same sex Velcro may help to keep them on
deck. Works best with curly haired dogs.

I take my cockatiel paddling when I'm just juking around in a bay or harbor and
he loves it. He sits on my shoulder, head thrust out into the wind, giving a
squawk every now and then. Jumping fish fascinate him and he'll turn his head
and look at me quizically when they do. Other times I'll put him on the front
deck and he'll walk up and down and sideways on the deck bunjies surveying his
little world. At some point I'll pop the front of the spray skirt off, put in a
couple inches of water and he'll splash around in front of my knees. Now, if I
could only get him to help paddle....a feathered one of course.<g>

Happy Dog loves it when I put her PFD on 'cause she knows we're going for a
ride, somewhere. She prefers to ride but panics sometimes in white water and
bails. She definitely prefers the sea kayak so I take this boat sometimes on
water I shouldn't... When the conditions are cold, she will consent to ride in
the cockpit but only because that's the only way she can come along. Usually in
Class 3 or better, she swims on the first rapid. After that, I can lay the boat
completely on it's side and she'll hang in there amazingly. We did a river this
weekend. I have a torn hip and she's having a problem with one eye. We both
felt much, much better, until after our first night back home. Happy weighs 32
pounds. I recommend a good PFD, a spot on the boat that's theirs, and foam or
something that aids their getting on and off the boat without getting tangled up
in cables and gear, etc., and get good at bracing...

Marcia, the woman who was probably the first person to sea kayak much around
here, had a small cocker spaniel, "Lacey," which she took **everywhere**: on
the Columbia, in Willapa Bay, in the San Juans, on the West coast of Vancouver
Island, etc. Solo, no less! (We call Marcia "the matron saint of Lower
Columbia River sea kayaking;" see a trip report of her "return" to our area,
below the sig, which originally appeared on Wave~Length, Paddlewise's
predecessor.)

Lacey had a pad on the afterdeck, just behind the coaming, of that carpet
backing stuff, I think, so she could stick her claws into something. That
worked fine until things got rough. Then Marcia would put Lacey in the
cockpit, between her legs, and there was enough room for Lacey to get her head
out, through the nylon tunnel of Marcia's sprayskirt,* if Marcia did not zip up
her PFD. Wish I had a picture of that!

Lacey is gone, now, but I suspect she may have been the first sea-farin' yakin'
dog hereabouts!

Memorable Meals: "Trip Report"

Like others, my most memorable meals are associated with an "event" more
than with especally exotic/tasty food ... but there waaass this ONE
time. It's kind of a long story:

Marcia must have bought her Orca (one of the original Eddyline designs:
microcephalic bow; huge, flat stern -- the automatic broach machine in a
following sea) in '84 or '83. I didn't even know what a sea kayak was,
then. But, in '86 she took me and my then-wife out to the local boat
ramp to paddle the behemoth. It was cool, and inspired enough
confidence for us to commit to a memorable week-long guided Baja
expedition with Tim and Larry "The Kayak," over the Xmas break. Marcia
moved to Corvallis, OR, and I sort of lost touch with her.

Fast forward to the summer of '93, two years after Marcia had sold her
ENTIRE sea kayaking kit (yak, two paddles, all the specialized
outfitting gear, multiple dry bags, etc., etc.) to my long-time buddy
Gary, *for $400!* By this time, Marcia had taken her boat, with her
spaniel Lacey on the back deck (or, in heavy weather, in the cockpit!),
ALL OVER the Pacific Northwest, *by herself:* San Juans, Barkley Sound,
Desolation Sound, all over the Columbia River, and, *very often,* on
Willapa Bay, WA, to her most favorite campsite on Long Island.

Lacey was getting long in tooth, and Marcia's "gift" had gotten
Gary and me started paddling yaks down here, so Gary, my SO Becky, and I
scheduled a special "nostalgia" trip for Marcia and Lacey: we borrowed
another yak and freed up the Orca and all of Marcia's gear so she could
trek out to her favorite spot, one last time. This was to honor and
recognize the lady we called "the matron saint of Lower Columbia River
sea kayaking."

We really did this up brown: a trio of roses and a glass of Chardonnay
were handed to her, *as she stepped ashore* at her old spot; we had
planned a mega veggie stir fry tailored to her food preferences (you
don't want to know); set up her tent; catered to her every whim; took
her and the aging dog on a hike to the cedar grove; yada yada yada.

We were having a terrific time, telling lies, getting a little sloshed.

As we were finishing the mid-afternoon snack (freshly-made guacamole and
chips) and the first bottle of wine, we heard an annoying little whine
on the water -- a small skiff was approaching, vectoring across up the
Bay. Ah, well, some yahoo out for a spin ... the falling tide will take
care of HIM pretty soon! No ... they're coming ashore here. My god,
it's Mary and Link! What's this stuff? A huge cooler? Crepes? Freshly
sauteed apples in sauce? What's Mary doing with that stuff? Oh, yeah,
she's warming the crepes, heating the sauce, ladling the stuff out onto
crepes in front of our faces, and flambeeing the whole thing with
brandy! Huh? *Ice cream,* still hard from the dry ice, on top? I
think I've died and gone to food heaven! Groan ... I'm so stuffed I
don't think I can even roll over!

Thank you, Marcia.

A kayaker/instructor of Anacortes, named Van Hicks told of a story of a seal
in Anacortes Wa. that would jump on the back of a kayak for a ride. Better
be expecting that one!

This is a funny thread.

I have a 17 foot Mad River canoe and have taken my dog Max, a Golden
Retriever, paddling in it plenty of times. He often jumps out, and getting
him back in can be a bit of a challenge. But he loves the water so much, he
can be hard to control when around it.

Three years ago I bought a WS Pungo so I would have a "kayak" that I could
paddle with him. He sits in front of me in the Pungo and seems quite
content. Obviously, neither of these options is good for anything except a
few feet from a safe shoreline. But still it can be fun, for "family"
trips.

Our Aussie, Tibi, loves paddling. She helps out with front paws over the
deck. She usually rides up on the bow (back feet in and torso perched like a
bow-sprint.

Check out the Kayaking with Dogs page on our web site for lots if hints and
ideas we've learned during Tibi's three years of paddling. Too, we now have
a big board of dogs and kayaks photos at the Kayak Center, but we're not yet
good enuf with a scanner to put many on the web site..... Email us photos
and other ideas and tips and we'll eagerly include them!
