Can anyone tell me what states require registration of, or otherwise
tax, canoes and kayaks? Texas is proposing to do so, and those of us
affected are gearing up to fight it.

See the web page discussing the issue.

Thanks.

In Pennsylvania, there is a rule that says to use State waters, you have to
get a boat licence, no matter what kind of boat you have. I think it's
about $10 per boat (Glenn?) but I don't remember for sure. If you're
paddling on private waters you don't have to have it.

Georgia does not have a license or tax for canoes or kayaks. Good thing,
or I'd have to pay it many times.

Regarding PA, you are thinking of the $10 annual launch permit for
state parks. There isn't a licensing requirement for canoes and
kayaks. However, to use any fish commission facilities (some
lakes and launch sites), you do need to license your canoe or
kayak. This isn't a big deal if you bought the boat in Pennsylvania,
however, they will force you to pay state sales tax on any boat
purchased out of state. I have no idea how long the sales tax
requirement remains in effect and what this means to people who
moved into the state from other places, though.

NOT a license. It is state registration.

No. They will levy the PA sales tax on your boat if you cannot
demonstrate that you paid a state sales tax where you reside. I live in NJ
and I paid the tax there or in Florida where I bought one. They cannot tax
again. They are satisfied if you paid the tax Somewhere. I also bought one
boat in Delaware, which has no sales tax. They did not reguire that I pay
it to them.

Supposedly (I haven.t tested it) the F&G Registration supercedes
DCNR stickers required for state parks, and also for county level parks.

As in another message, no, it is not a license it is registration.
For Each Boat!!! I would have been happier if it had been a license...
probably cheaper because it would be me rather than the boats that would
have been registered (and paid for). PAF&B has various rationalizations why
this should be so. Only PAF&B believes them.
It's $10 for two years. Initially there could be a $2 handling fee
if you go through a county court or directly with the Commission.
BEWARE!!! F&B allows their agents, e.g. boat marinas and supply
stores, to charge a handlling fee but do not limit it in any way. I have
heard of people paying up to $25 for this,,,,
