Could someone catch me up on what's going on. We've been away, adn we
both unsubscribed from both Paddlewise & NYCKayaker, since we couldn't
face coming home to two weeks' worth of messages.

Thanks,

Joan

Briefly, we're trying to set up a winter Paddlewise get-together in
Florida, possibly in mid-February. The dates and locations haven't been
firmed up, yet, although there's been serious talk of the weekend of
February 19 and Key Largo. Several people, including myself, have expressed
interest in getting away from the winter weather and meeting some friends.

I know that on a hot weekend while it's still summer, it's hard to think of
getting away from miserable winter weather, but I assure you, it's coming,
and it's probably best to at least rough in something like that far enough
in advance that people that have to fight for vacation dates have time
enough to do so.

Do be careful Wes - you're dangerously close to flaming one of my
favorite seasons. Actually, it's difficult for me to choose a
favorite, as I love them all - and I love paddling in all seasons.

I love warmth and sunshine as much as the next person, but I'd go
crazy if that's all I had.

I'm even thinking of moving further north - just so I can enjoy more
"real" winter paddling. There's hardly anything sweeter than getting
all bundled up in fleece and drysuit, paddling in the snow,
surrounded by the loveliness of winter, and coming home to a warm
fire and a good book.

And by the way - with so many people thinking of winter weather as
"miserable", I usually enjoy a very special quietness on the water
when the "pleasure" boaters are at home complaining of how
"miserable" it is outside, and waiting for the sun to come back. I
love paddling in the rain too - after all, it's just more water, and
according to me, water is good. :-)

When I was a kid, I used to think that people were crazy to take off to
Florida every winter when they retired. The older I get, the more sense it
makes. I'm a big fan of winter -- until after the holiday season. Then,
everything is frozen up, there's no paddling (except in Florida) and I'm
counting the days until ice out.

If you think I'm flaming winter, you should see some of the columns I write
for the paper in the depth of the cold and dreary.

You know, there are quite a few miles of saltwater coastline between
the frozen north and Florida - just so you know that not all water
north of Florida is frozen in winter.

And what exactly do you say about it then?

Melissa

ps: It's raining, all the holiday weekenders are staying inside (no
doubt wondering why it's so "miserable" outside), so I'm going
paddling! :-)

Take a look at:

I think these are about the best of the ones that are online. There are
some more bitter winter haters that I ought to put on the site.

Uh, Wes isn't talking about deserting winter altogether. He's looking
for a break during the long winter months... much like some folks in
really warm climates look for a break from the summer heat and head
north. It's nice when you can take off to another location for a
change of pace and mix it with your normal routine.

btw, I bet the folks in much of Florida would argue that it's warmth
and sunshine in Florida all year long any more than it's frozen and
overcast in Minnesota all year long. One year, even Galveston Bay
froze over (but that was a very long time agp and I wasn't even here
yet :-)

Cheers,

Jackie

I'm starting my paddling season. I limit my paddling during July and August
to out of state locations.
Labor Day Weekend and it is still in the mid nineties.
Looking forward to cooler paddling weather.

Not a lot cooler here in Michigan -- the thermometer outside as I write
this says 91, and the humidity ain't low, considering the fog this morning.
I'm limiting the paddling and not fighting the traffic this weekend myself.

Well put. Here (some 80 miles south of Melissa's Grays Bay), the soft, grey
tones of winter stillness are punctuated by the "mack, mack" of solicitous duck
hunters and the scrawking of geese. Lone winter paddling is one of my favorite
pastimes. I find it stimulates my powers of observation -- it makes for a more
intense experience.

Wes' writing captures that feeling as well as any I have read.

Flame on, brother Wes!

I'm curious (perhaps I missed a post on this) why you don't combine
the get-together with the SK Symposium in late Feb. Not sure of the
name, but I think Sweetwater puts it on. A couple of folks from
my club were there last year and are considering it for next. The
Sweetwater folks were at Grand Marais and had chatted it up a bit.
