Hi, folks:

I own a Necky Tesla NM, and find that the lip of the seat cuts off
circulation in me legs, leading to mild to significant discomfort on long
paddles and leg-asleepage upon landing, which often embarrasses me. :>

I'm strongly considering having the seat removed altogether and replaced
with something custom-made for *my* rear end and legs.

Any recommendations on folks to do this in the San Francisco Bay Area or
nearabouts?

Thanks,

-ashton

I'd suggest trying to put something like a foam wedge, that starts at the
height of the seat or even slightly higher in front of the seat, that extends
out a bit to give your thighs more support. I have a foam wedge in front of
my seat that is wonderfully comfortable and I never have the sleepy feet
syndrome I used to in my other boat. You can velcro in the foam so you can
descuz once in a while but keep it in place while rolling or any other time
it might float out.

I saw a web page with a detailed "How to do it" carving the seat out of some
kind of foam. I will try to find it...

If you want to try a "do it yourself" project, there's a good article
in the Feb. '98 Sea Kayaker about making your own very comfortable
cockpit arrangement - including custom carved foam seat, hip pads,
and backband. You can customize the thigh brace pads as well.

I've paddled a lot of Necky boats, and though there are some nice
boats among them, I've never liked the seats - especially the high
seat backs - definitely rip that out and replace it with a backband.

Also - I think Gabriel Romeu (on this list) has a site dedicated to
customizing - sorry, but I can't locate the URL at the moment. I'm
sure Gabriel or someone will have it handy.

A comfortable and securely fitting cockpit makes all the difference
in the world - good luck!

Melissa

VCP makes a very comfortable closed foam seat for retrofitting
kayaks. It's the same foam seat which is put in the plastic versions of
the Avocet and Skerray. It's very comfy and will be easy to retrofit into
your Necky.
If you can't find it locally let me know and I can give you the name of a
local paddleshop in Madison that usually stocks it and can ship it to you.

Good luck and good boatin'.

Mark

My seat is carved out of a single block of foam and is very comfortable.
I can spend all day in the boat without landing with no problems. The
fellow who built my boat (Nadgee Expedition)took a grinder to the block
and ground out two dents around the size of my bum cheeks. He custom
builds the kayaks so knows the size of the person he builds them for.
THe seat is attached via velcro so I have about an Inch of play in
moving my sea backwards or forwards.

You might check the Chesapeake Light Craft website -- sorry, I don't know
the URL off the top of my head and am at the wrong computer so it's not
bookmarked here -- but they have a "comfort seat" commonly used by
homebuilders. It reportedly gets good reviews.

I didn't buy the comfort seat when I built my Northbay because I
found the standard seat sold with the kits to be quite comfortable.
The seat essentially comes in three pieces; the backband (from a
third party company), and two foam pieces that are glued together.
The bottom piece of foam is the same shape as the top piece but
it has a hole cut out of the middle such that it's like a 3/4" ring.
I just rounded off the edges on the top a bit.The top piece sinks into
the hole and after awhile starts to formto your butt. Missing, however, are
thigh braces and knee pads but the kit contains a couple of blocks
of foam for those as well.

I use the Valley foam seat that is standard in their plastic boats. I cutoff
the hip pads and glued a piece of thin minicell to the bottom to make it a
bit firmer and tougher.

It's available through GRO
