I always thought that one of the main reasons
for the decline of interest for folding kayaks in that period,
came form the growing ownership of cars...
People did not have to transport their kayak by train anymore...
(Which worked very well, especially in Germany,
German trains even had special prices for that?)
The growing use of the outboard motors had its influence on
the whole paddling market I think, not only folding boats?

Good point. For the matter, whether in Europe or North America, without the
use of a car, how many people would have rigid kayaks? :-)

Welcome to all the new subscribers to the list, and I just wanted to
extend an extra welcome to those of you joining from Europe.
Paddlewise has always had a pretty international flavor (or flavour),
but seems to have become even more worldly lately. Having spent close
to 10 years living in Europe (Vienna), I really appreciate the non
US-centric viewpoint. The US can sometimes be a big lumbering beast
and ignore the fact that not everyone speaks English, measures
distance in miles, and reads the temp in Fahrenheit, or lives in the
northern hemisphere. Though because I live in Minnesota now, I'd like
to point out that -40 is -40 everywhere.

When possible, I'd love to see people convert their weights and
temps. Maybe someone can point out a good utility somewhere on the
net that make this easier.

Now, let's discuss that Paddlewise foreign exchange program....

Patrick, as I see it, it would get quite cumbersome to translate
temperature to 5 or more different measures, length (distance) into the
multitude of possibilities- I think it would be handy if a
qualifier/context is appended to any units of measure.

The recipient should go the extra mile = 16090000000000 angstroms = .333
leagues = 8 furlongs = 320 rods = 0.29 leagues (sea)= 880 fathoms, and
of course, 380200 picas.

Hi Patrick,

I haven't seen you for a while. Don't forget the Inland Sea Kayakers dinner
at Bascali's tonight, and the pool session next Sunday. Some new people
will be joining us tonight, possibly including one of our neighbors who
very much wants to try sea kayaking after seeing our kayaks around the
neighborhood.

Folding boats pretty much were the paddling market during the period under
discussion here (with the exception of a few plywood boats and some early
fiber glass ones).
