I wish I had such nice experiences to share about paddling with cats.

The one time I tried it, the cat seemed a bit upset by the idea of having
all that water moving around the hull. And he was ensconsed deep in the
hull all the way at the bow. And the boat was white, so the cat could see
the shadow of the bow wave moving past him. And I was in a sprint racing
boat, which is awfully tippy if you've never paddled one. And the cat kept
shifting around in the bow, throwing my balance off. And I didn't know how
to roll back then. And I wasn't wearing a skirt, so rolling would have been
impossible anyway. And the woman who is now my spouse was on shore saying
really unkind things about my judgement. And she was saying them very
loudly. And this was during a training camp with a lot of other paddlers
around. [We've been married for thirty years but I still hear about this
incident once in a while.] And we had to put the boat on end and shake it
to dislodge poor Sam the cat. He lived another eighteen years, so, yet
again, no animals were harmed in the making of this tale.

Paddling with plastic pink flamingos is really a lot more fun than paddling
with cats.

I doubt that *anyone* could share a nice experience about paddling with cats.

My daughter has a Maine Coon Cat that likes water, he probably wouldn't
be too bad. But I have never tried.

<LOL> Of all the cats I've had in my lifetime I can't think of one I would
try to take kayaking. I have enough scars already just from trying to stuff
them into cat carriers. I did offer to take my sister's purebred Himalaya
out for a jaunt but both cat and sister declined vociferously.

Here in the Scottish Highlands we frequently paddle with Highland midges.
They invariably drown. This is generally regarded as a good outcome.

My golden retriever loves swimming in the sea, but she studiously ignores
my kayak and my open sail boat. She simply won't climb aboard the boat: I
think she regards me as an interloper in her private swimming pool.

I wonder whether "sea mushing" would be possible: attach a couple of,
say, Newfoundlands by a harness to your kayak and sit back for the ride.
Presumably if anyone has tried they never lived to tell the tale.

Yeah, I can just imagine trying to get my cat in the boat. In the house,
she's the queen of the jungle, but outside the house, she's a terrified
quivering ball of fur.

But, a funny dog story for you all:

I was visiting a friend's lake house about 5 years ago, and decided to
take my kayak with me, since they're into just about anything that floats.
Well, my buddy Ken takes the kayak out about a quarter of a mile from the
dock, and capsizes. No problem, I hop into one of his canoes, and head out
to get him back in the kayak.

As I paddled past the neighbor's dock, I heard a rushing sound and a
whine, and then the canoe pitched like I'd been hit by a train. I braced,
and somehow managed to stay upright, and then saw a golden retriever in
the bow of the canoe. His owner apologized repeatedly, and I offered to
take the dog for a short spin, because I still had a swimmer to rescue,
and the dog had no intention of getting out anyway. So, the dog and I
rescued Ken, and came back in. The dog hasn't paddled with me since, but
Ken's become quite a good kayaker.

All,

I'll be getting a longer boat to either replace or supplement my well used
Romany. Has anyone paddled the KS Millenium? Thoughts? Boats I've
owned/paddled that might be comparable are the PH Sirius & Capella, NDK
Explorer, Nordkapp and Mariner II and Express.

If someone could scan and email me the Seakayak review (72:13), it would be
a great help.

Thanks,

Thomas

I own an Express and have paddled the Mariner II and the Romany Explorer in
tide rips and wind. I also test paddled the Millenium in light wind and
swell. I think that either the Romany or the Mariner II are far more
forgiving and easier to handle in conditions. The Millenium had too much
windage. It wasn't bad but could not compare to the other two. IMHO.

Hi Jerry,

I'd expect the Romany to have less windage than the Millenium since it's 3
feet shorter... The Mariner II is also a bit shorter than the
MIllenium. I like the Mariner II but I prefer the three bulkhead/hatch
arrangement of the british style boats (no, I'm not trolling for a long
thread here) and I don't think that's an option on a Mariner(?). I also
like a lower rear deck for doing some of the Greenland rolls.

What I'd really like is a boat that fit me like the PH Sirius _at_ 17ish x 20"
but had a bit more maneuverable hull and three VCP hatches. I'm likely
headed to Alaska for a longish trip this summer and I'd like something more
suited to multiday trips than the Romany. Depending on budget constraints,
I'd like to eventually replace the Romany with a Coaster for day paddles,
one night trips, playing in Deception Pass, etc.

Best,

Thomas

The older model is the same size as the new Expedition model. (USA imports)
The new Expedition model is sporting a new deck with compass spot and new
deck rigging. Same hull.

Kevin, cheaper outfitting??

Yes, the outfitting seemed slightly less rugged than my recollection from
extensive paddling of their boats in 1999 (or thereabouts). But it's still
some of the best in the business, with some clever ideas. I love the rubber
bushings on the foot pedal (very comfortable, no lack of bracing support),
and the extra large rear cockpit coaming (very easy to put on a skirt). As
far as I am aware, nobody else does that. But still, it seemed like they
are cutting a few corners in production compared to two years ago. Though
perhaps this has no noticeable effect. Anyhow, this is just an initial
opinion based on five minute examination on a store floor.
