I have a Durango which was fine for my Captiva...Now we have a
Carolina for my wife. Both wont fit (flat) on the rack. I looked at
the Thule and Yakima sites and am abit overwhelmed...Is buying a
"wider" rack better than the "on edge type"..Help !!

Do it either way. It is easy to widen an existing rack: just purchase longer
bars than they recommend. The rack will stick out past the roof edge, and
you'll have to wear a helmet until you get trained to duck the ends on exiting,
but I have run an 80-inch bar on the roof of my Toy PU to hold three very wide
yaks up top ... flat.

If that does not float your boat, then just fit the saddles to the edges of the
two yaks and do it that way. Some cushioning between the two and an extra
security strap around the pair at their mid-points will make you feel more
secure, also. I've also done this, on an 800 mile drive, and all was well
except some of the cushioning blew out. Yaks did fine.

Secondary consideration is that edge on may make your arrangement overheight,
for ferry transport ... a few more bucks.

For what it is worth I have been told that according to law your bars can
not extend farther than the mirrors on the side of the vehicle.

Good Luck with whatever solution you end up choosing.

What about length? Do you need to tie a red flag to the end of your
kayak or canoe if it extends past the back end of the car?

Sorry I don't know the specifics of that law. Other than it does exist and
it has to do with how far your load extends. I just don't know the exact
length.

Anyone ?????

Revised NJ laws (1995) and I think perhaps nationally now, are that max length
of rack bars is 1 1/2 times the width of the vehicle, but not greater than a
lane width (whatever that might be...). Also, an overhanging load can reach
36 inches behind back bumper before a red flag (I think at least 18 inches
square) is required.
