Well, I'm starting to think about a February or early March trip to locales
further south. Canoe & Kayak mag has a Destinations piece about Savannah,
which peaked my interest.

Any paddlers familiar with that general area and willing to offer advice? I'd
have about 5 days of paddling time, not including traveling days. On this
trip, the preference is to car camp and I strongly prefer "parks" over private
camp grounds. Will be interested in side trips to town for good seafood, and
other attractions in the evening, but it's not necessary. For paddling, will
want lots of beautiful scenery and wildlife, but will tolerate the occasional
road, building, etc., as long as the area is not congested, noisy and
otherwise urban.

Not looking for challenging water on this trip, but rather, serenity, scenery
and so forth. Want routes that will keep me on the water for at least 5-6
hours each day (ie: no small bodies of water that I'd fully explore in a
couple hours time). Also, routes will need to be "out and back" to avoid
arranging shuttles and having to comply with a schedule.

If you know of places in that vicinity, a simple response with the name of the
body of water (ahhh, a little more detailed than "Atlantic Ocean", though)
will get me started with an internet search for details. But, of course, feel
free to offer as much info as you care to type!

If others think that they might be in that area during the same basic time
frame, let me know.

Thanks a bunch.

Rick,
A couple of ideas in the Hilton Head Area, though on the mainland.

Point your browser at mapquest and look up Bluffton, SC. Bluffton is an
artsy old town that's pretty neat. It's on the mainland inland of Hilton
Head and has a floating public dock that would make a great launch site.
Another possibility is Brighton Beach which is on the same river but a
little closer to the sound behind Hilton Head. Another nice floating public
dock but exposed to wind out of the east and the long fetch from the sound.

I haven't kayaked there but have spent a good bit of time in the area
scouting it. The Bluffton landing was a major Civil War landing. Mind the
tides there as the water really moves at full flood and ebb (flat water
though).

There are literally thousands of places to go in the Low Country area. Stay
off Hilton Head though. I think all the access areas make you pay. Can't
help ya with park type camp sites, though I know of a commercial campground
on Hilton Head.

The main destination around Savannah is Tybee Island, a typical beach
resort town. Kayakers prefer to put in on the river and paddle over to
Little Tybee (which is actually bigger, I think), which has miles of creeks
to explore. It's possible to circumnavigate Little Tybee, coming back on
the ocean side. That side can be a bit busy at high tide, as there are
several bar breaks offshore and a decent beach break as well. Best plan is
to check in with Sea Kayak Georgia, on the right as you drive onto the
island, for advice and maps. Accommodations tend to be a little high on
Tybee, although you'll be there before they ratchet up for spring break.
The only campground AFAIK is very pricey, $25 for a tent spot. The nearest
state park is Skidaway Island, don't know anything about it. Here's a link
to all GA state parks: http://gastateparks.org/

Also, check with Mike Moody at Altamaha Wilderness Outpost in Darien about
places in the Altamaha River basin (http://www.broadriveroutpost.com/).
Lots of swamp paddling that you'll be there in the perfect time of year
for. They can do a shuttle for you.

Email me if you have specific questions.
