Advise sought on paddling in NY city at Christmas.
If the wind is not howling, and we have our dry suits, etc, is paddling the
harbor or east river a real possibility? Are there recommended rental places?

There are no official rentals in NYC. What there are are several touring
services. Try http://www.nykayak.com and http://www.manhattankayak.com both
of which have tours and provide kayaks, paddles, PFDs. Charges are in the
$100 or so range for an outing.

You definitely need a dry suit by Christmas time here or a wet suit, albeit
the latter is on the margins of being adequate.

There are limitations imposed by post 9-11 security zones. Basically you
cannot get near Ellis and Liberty Islands, the latter where the Statue of
Liberty is. You must stay 100 yards off of piers on the Manhattan side from
around 48th St to 59th St. And you must stay away 25 yards from tunnel
ventilators, bridge piers and anything considered a port facility. Put ins
are possible best probably at Pier 63 at about 23rd St. (to determine the
nearest street to a pier subtract 40 from the pier's number). There is also
a put-in at Pier 40, which lines up with Houston St. more or less. Pier 26,
the home of the Downtown Boathouse, pulls up its kayak dock at around now,
i.e. it will not be out there in December through about late April or early
May.

Any trip should be planned with the currents that can be quite strong,
especially on the East River, and hard to paddle against if they are not
going in your direction.

good paddling,
