I'm interviewing for a job in Sheboygan, WI later this week. Sheboygan is
on the Lake Michigan shore, about 60 mi. south of Green Bay. Honestly, I'm
not sure I care all that much about the job. What I *really* am interested
in is....are there any boating groups in the Green Bay area, or possibly
Milwaukee? It would make the job much more appealing if there were, and I
might well decline it if not. Thanks for any thoughts anyone may have!

Just bought a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck (flareside) and am testing the
waters for pickup truck kayak racks. Considering the CastleCraft TT2 --
http://www.castlecraft.com/truck_racks.htm. Anyone out there own an F-150
flareside being used to haul kayaks? If so, what type of rack do you use?
Anyone using a CastleCraft on their pickup? Would be interested in learning
about homemade racks as well.

A year or two ago I saw a "homemade" version of the JC Whitney Bed
Extender
http://jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml;$sessionid$BO0MRZIAABAQGQSNDV0SFFCCJUOXKIV0?CATID=338227&BQ=jcw2

being used to transport a couple of kayaks. They had even rigged up
lights on the bed
extender. They very much enjoyed not having to lift the boats beyond
waist height to
load them into the truck... They had tie downs on the bed extender and
secured the bow toggles
at the front of the truck bed.

both clubs have both whitewater paddlers and sea kayakers as members.

a bit further south, Chicago has three sea kayaking clubs, the first two of
which have a sea kayaking focus, the last now has more sea kayak activity
than rowing, but historically has been mainly a rowing club (but has a
clubhouse with easy Lake Michigan access, just north of downtown):

Now there's a man that has got his priorities in order.

A little over seven years ago I became aware that I was going to be laid
off and had over a six month notice so I started job searching. I had
lived and worked in the San Francisco bay area for most of my life and was
getting pretty tired of the rat race. I knew someone that was living in
Ithaca (a romantic interest) so I visited the area, liked it, and started
looking for work here. I found a possible position, interviewed for it and
was offered the job. I then had to decide whether I wanted to move across
country and take on a job that paid $15K a year less than what I had been
making. I made the move. Within a couple of months the romance fizzled
and after a year I got laid off from that job as well (the parent company
closed the local office). But I really liked the area and had started
kayaking and doing a lot of flyfishing and really decided that where and
how I lived was a higher priority than where I was working or how much
money I was making. I stayed.
A short time after the fizzled romance I had also met the woman to whom I'm
married and now work at what I think is the best job I've ever had.

I hope your choice produces a similar result.

Adding to Erik's response--there's a rather large group of sea kayakers in
Milwaukee (40 minutes south of Sheboygan). Though not a formal club, the
group paddles Saturday and Sunday year-round. We usually paddle early
morning (9:30 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays). Afterwards we go
for coffee etc. The group includes sub-groups of rough water paddlers,
fitness paddlers (training for competition), and many others, including some
who only paddle the warmer months. We also practice rescues and towing on a
regular basis, even in the winter months.

During the summer/warmer months, we frequently paddle at Kohler-Andrae State
Park just south of Sheboygan. There's also some kayakers in Sheboygan who
welcome visitors and newcomers to the area.

Under development is a water trail along Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shoreline
that will link to the Illinois Water Trail to the south.

This is a nice place to paddle and live, but you do need to be outfitted for
cold water.

While you're in the area for an interview, if you'd like to meet for coffee
(or a beer) to discuss, or get together for a paddle on Lake Michigan send me
an email back-channel and I'll seen you my phone number and see if we can
work out the details.

Finally, for a bit more info check out my website
(www.wildernessconnection.com).
